Wim,
The TRUTH; I'm sorry to disappoint you, but we didn't use the yaw string to coordinate our turns. Given the speed that jets fly and therefore the ball never got that far out on a normal...

I transitioned to the A+ (original designation of the B for some budget/political reasons as I remember - GE engines, but not the good HUD, etc., of the D), in 1987 or '88; can't remember when the...

I agree it would look cool in the air, but…..good grief I think it would be a lot of work to install the glove vanes in the model. Quick sea story: When I was Maintenance Officer in VF-101 where...

Tom,
I believe that the purpose of the track was to 'fold' the launch bar back close to the nose gear strut during retraction so that the launch bar did not extend up so high in the nose wheel...

The main mounts rotated to go into the fuselage wheelwell, but I don't remember any "shortening" during retraction.

Probably VF-33 'Tarsiers'. Check out the link above. Not in English, but has a nice side view of the VF-33 jet with USS...

Yep, the Phoenix was designed as a Badger/Bear/Backfire bomber killer. Had a big warhead and delayed fuze to avoid just taking off a wingtip of the big bombers. That fuze was later "clipped" to...

Sluggo,
Good job - I killed those particular brain cells some years ago. The number I seem to remember from F-14A days, was with 2/2/2 and tanks, we only had 4,500 pounds of fuel 'on the ball'...

The ordnance load on the Tomcat varied by the mission (obviously), but we did not carry Phoenix missiles unless absolutely necessary due to the added weight. For every Phoenix missile carried, you...

In the full scale the spoilers were inhibited with wing sweep aft of 40 degrees as I remember, (could have been 45-50 degrees). But aft of that only the differential stabilators were used for roll,...

So, add in two K-170 or K-180Gs, servos, etc and it is a $20,000 jet? This is not a pejorative comment, just asking what other's opinion is of total fly away cost.

Gus

Names on canopy

Why did you use the same name on the canopy for the front and back cockpits? The typical 'fleet' F-14 had the pilot's name on front and Radar Intercept Officer's name on the aft part of the canopy...

RE: Skymaster F14 Tomcat

Looks great! The nose gear detail with nose gear steering unit, holdback fitting, nose gear actuator, etc., is just superb.

RE: Skymaster F14 Tomcat

Fender,
I stand corrected! I'm correct in that this 'splinter' scheme was not a tactical F-14 paint job, but I was unaware that NSAWC used the scheme to simulate eastern bloc adversaries. I...

RE: Skymaster F14 Tomcat

Fender,
I'm not trying to start an argument - others are doing a fine job of that on other threads - but I would be interested if you have a link or reference. I went through Top Gun in 1978 and...

RE: Skymaster F14 Tomcat

Personally, I don't care for the scheme, probably because it's not representative of any tactical scheme on the F-14. Closest is probably the Keith Ferris geometric paint scheme used for a short...

RE: Skymaster F14 Tomcat

I know there was at least one shore-based aft wingsweep landing. The potential problem was landing speed; max tire speed was supposedly 190 knots, which wasn't far off the aft wingsweep approach...

RE: Skymaster F14 Tomcat

Wim,
Yes, was fortunate to be in the Tomcat from 1975 to 1996. Chuck Sewell was one of the primary test pilots in the early F-14 development. So, his opinion that the one wing forward, one wing...

RE: Skymaster F14 Tomcat

One wing swept aft carrier landing was never even discussed nor practiced in the simulator in the F-14 community. It wasn't even in the emergency procedures for field landing as I remember. The...
