I abandoned glow 5 years ago because of the smell, oily airframes, and cost. That's when I tried electric, but ultimately went gas and have not looked back.

My 1/3 scratch build came in at 22lbs and I think it flies better than the 18lb'er. I have always preferred a little heavier than recommended, sometimes a lot.

A 1" hole saw will remove the balsa sheeting, then fill it back with a plug. Cut the fabric, drill the hole, fix the nut, fill the hole, iron on the patch, all of thirty minutes.
