Hi all, haven't been here in a bit. Haven't flown in a few years now. There was some discussion on 4 Stars awhile back, what a good flyer. My 40 size was bouncy on landing, moving the CG back and...

429,
I hadn't heard that. My newish at the time 55 was running erratically. My head was sore from banging it on the wall. I just happened to check the head screws. A bit loose, tightened them and...

Problems I have had with poor engine performance.

Fuel tank height relative to the needle of the carb. I try to twist the engine mount around to get this as close as possible. Hard to accomplish...

I am a big fan of the 65. Smooth, easy too tune, stays in tune. Slightly heavy, but I think that helps smooth the firing impulses a bit. I have found the APC 13x6 to be great for my 4*40, fast enough...

Hobbsy, I did tune it that way when I installed the engine. I say it may be a low time engine because of the need to lean out the bottom end. Your suggested method has worked great on all my Saitos...

I had a Saito 65 on a 4*40 a few years ago. That engine broke a piston. Bought another 65 off ebay. Had a bent push rod tube, replaced it. Mounted it inverted on the 4*40 with APC 13x6. It had been...

Hard to tell from the pic, it looks like the tubing may be too big for the muffler nipple?? Other than that, what happens when you richen the high speed needle?

#323 checking in,
I bought a saito 65 off the bay. "good compression", the bearings were awful. Rusted up bad. Replaced the bearings, adjusted the valves and installed on my 4*40. I had another 65...

Jeffie, I have two of these also. Great little engines other than the idle quality. My problem was an inconsistent idle on both. Most rc carbs have a spring that pushes the rotating barrel out. The...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I had an 82 on a 40 size Midwest Zero, about 5lb, 10oz. Started with an APC 12x9 when it was barely broken in. Good speed, good pull- fast outa sight verticle. I think the 12x10 would have been ideal...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

Hi all, My trusty .65 died tonight. While on a verticle upline the engine quit, thought I went too lean on the main needle. It would barely turn over when I got it on the bench. Pulled it apart...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

My 82 likes a 12x10 APC on the Midwest 40 Zero. Fast, good verticle. The 12x9 didn't load it down enough after break-in. 10% fuel used.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

FWIW, back in the day when I was helping motor bike racers with their engine. We use to set up valve clearance on the loose side of spec thinking that would allow better valve seal. I look back now...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

My Midwest Zero 60", 5.8 lbs flies great on APC 12x9, 12x10. I think the engine likes the 12x10 load a little better.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I need a cylinder and a ring for a 65. Couldn't find them at Horizon hobbies. Any other places for older parts?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

isn't this normal?
I noticed my Saito 45 doing this the other day. Could have sworn my 82 does it also. Both run great.
Once I hear the fuel at the carb they are usually ready to fire up.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I have two 45's that need new throttle levers. The are the thin metal type that is captured by a nut. I can't find these at Horizon. Anyone have a suggestion for replacements?
Thanks, MikeB

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

That 13x6 is a great prop for a Saito 65. I broke-in my 82 in with a 13x7 APC. I needed to keep it very rich to keep from going over 10,500. I currently have a 12x9 APC, but it keeps pulling harder...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

If the fuel tank isn't too high, I would mount it inverted. I have a 65 that was inverted, ran super sweet. My 82 is fairly new and runs/idles/starts real good inverted. I didn't have quite as good...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I put 3 more flights on the 4*40. It had a Saito 45 prior to the 82, huge difference and still easy to land. The 82 will be going in another plane, the 4* is just for break in. I wouldn't say it is...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I put the 40 minutes on the Saito82 then installed in a 4*40 inverted. Took off like a home sick angel. Still running rich on bottom and top end. At full throttle and 13x7 APC, it was disappearing in...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

If the prop is too small for the displacement, it will over rev and possibly float the valves. What engine and prop are you using?
Carbon buildup on the valve stem can cause the valve to close too...
