Kimhoff and kimhoff:

We have our member number 162 as kimhoff, spelled a lowercase "K" and the new entry member number 255 Kimhoff with an uppercase "K" on the name. Are you the same person with a username change?

Please clarify.

Thanks.

Bill.

Little hard to believe you put a 50 cam in a 45. It tried the same thing and the lift is too high and the rockers hit and engine won't turn over.

Torque Wrench,

I keep forgetting to start it with a backwards flip. I've seen it done a lot of times and the engines start up fine.

A friend and I decided to not fly today due to clouds, and it turned out to be the best day in the last week and probably all of next week due to winds.

Just something to share with you all

I had been having trouble with my 82. At full throttle the engine appeared to "hunt" in flight. The RPM change was quite noticeable to the ear. Mixture changes on both low and high speed needles did not seem to have any effect.

On the weekend I pulled the engine out to replace the mount and do some firewall repairs and then reassembled the engine to the plane and did a rigging check. To my amazement, at full throttle, I had about 6% more servo throw than I actually needed to achieve full throttle.

So where was the extra 6% going? It was flexing the carby mount and pulling the intake manifold pipe out of the cyclinder head just enough to give the engine another place to suck from!!!

Result: Part throttle - On Song

Full thottle the pipe was pulled then it would Lean and drop RPM. The drop in RPM/power allowed the engine mount to flex back and close the gap and so on round and round.

A readjustment of the servo throw and repaired firewall appears to have cured my problem.

Interesting. [X(]

Thunderchild: that is a lesson we all learn at some point. Do the same check for all your servos, on all controls. If you have end point adjustment on your Tx use that. If not, adjust the linkage so that nothing is ending before the servo travel is ending. Not only does it cause mechanical problems it also damages servos and drains batteries sooner then need be.

Hi Kmot.

Yeah - it's very much a case of DOH!! I think.

Good lesson. End point adjust cuured it.

Hope no one minds me jumping in here, but the last two trips to the field my Saito 125 has ran like crap (servo travel is ok). It probably has about 1 1/2 gal. through it, using a 17 x 4 wide on a 7 lb 4 oz plane. It will still hover at 1/3 throttle but pull out sucks. I'm getting 8400 on the ground but when I ask for the power in the air it's like it's starving or something. 4 or 5 dead sticks. The intake valve was .006 so I adjusted it, could this be enough to make a difference? I've checked for air leaks, flushed the needle, tweaked the high and low end and did not help. Have not changed the glow plug? Any ideas what's going on?

DPrater:

I think you're over propped, 8400 rpm is just too slow. Try a 16x6 standard blade prop and see what happens.

bldrums,

Viton is the material the 'O' ring is made with, it's a shiney black rubbery plastic. This is a normal 'O' ring designed for use in hydraulics etc., I bought it at a shop that specialises in seals, they stock a wide range of brands, types and sizes, and have specification manuals on hand. I went with Viton because it is compatible with a wide range of fluids and has pretty good temperature range too. Cost just a little more than butyl or silicone rubber, a few cents each.

Just look in your Yellow Pages for Seals retailers. The size I used is ideal.

Cheers from the Barfly.

The first Saito 125's have finally made it over the pond, and mine has just arrived today.

Just need to get an airframe now to hold it while it runs.

Gary:

Sorry, missed your question. Medium fuel line still works on the FA-180, but if you're worried use the large size.

Just check the nipple on the carb- it's made for the medium size hose.

Finally got to fly my Ultimate some over the weekend. While trying to do some tuning,I found the throttle was never going past half open.Fixed that, readjusted on the ground (thanks to this thread),now it idles pretty good, comes up on top good with smoke from the exhaust, but in the air the throttle response from half to full goes away,I mean almost no change, and it will eventually die at full stick.Powermaster 20%,16x6 APC on a Goldberg Ultimate.Imanaged to get a couple flights and land with the engine running and see some bubbling from the pushrod tube boots.

Symptom just sounds like you're running lean. You may think you're already rich enough, but just try about another 1/4 turn open on the HS needle.

I'm answering a question asked a long time ago.... "What Saitos do you have?"

Answer:

2 FA-50's
2 FA-56 BK's destined for a Top Flite DC-3
1 FA-65
1 FA-72 FOR 80" wing CUB
1 FA-180 man, is this engine thirsty!

All:

This isn't specific to Saito engines, it's all engines, whatever the application.

"Why do I gwet more response from idle to 1/2 throttle than I do from 1/2 throttle to full?" This is a common quetion, with a little thought the answer is obvious.

Idling at 10%, then going to 50% at half throttle, you have opened the intske five times larger, a 500% increase.

But when you go from 1/2 throttle to full throttle you've only gotten a two to one increase. The power may approach being doubled, but the 5-6 thousand rpm change from iidle to 1/2 throttle will not be there.

Just a simple thing that needs to be remembered when trying for that higher engine power.

Ok, now that this thread is 102 pages long, I'm hoping maybe people can point me to some of the spots that might be useful for me. (Ok, shoot me for being lazy, but it'll be a bit before I can get around to reading the whole thread). I just picked up a used FA-100, and figure I should at least take it somewhat apart to make sure it looks good before trying to run it. Any tips for doing this? And is the manual available online anywhere, looks like I don't have one.

Only thing I'm a little concerned on is going to be prop clearance on the Venture that I'm planning on putting this on. Need to get around to building an engine stand sometime too.

If you ask Bill real nice he'll hook you up. The Google search at the bottom of any page in any thread can be used to find key-words in that thread.
