Hey Pete, I have progressive Suspension all the way around on my bike and it makes 70.5 hp @ 5,800 and 79 foot pounds of torque @ 3,500 and I can scrub the tires from edge to edge. How can I improve on that?

Pete, my bothers Cobra is a fiber glass replica he built himself, it has a Ford 306, approximately 300 hp. A 5 speed with overdrive handles the tranny chores. I found a Lincoln LS7 rear suspension in Winchester, Va. and took it to him. The drive shaft/propeller shaft is about 2.5" long.

I figured the cobra was a glass replica we had a place called 'the snake pit' over here that did them back in the late eighties and early nineties.The first ones were based on an old toyota crown chassis and later ones had a nice ladder chassis built for them.I always thought the ford 289 or chevy 283 was an ideal match,they are very light cars.Painted a few back then,most of my customers fitted 350 four bolt chevs behind a three speed auto but sometimes bigger was better i've seen some fitted with a 454 and twin turbos...man you can drive those things too fast by just pulling the choke out when they are cold,and my favourite memory is of a guy who turned up months later once he had got it on the road and said come for a ride.He's got some friends in america who sourced a nascar engine and i can tell you it scared me silly.Now no harley is perfect and you can do with a bit more ground clearance i reckon just ask your son with the r1 or even better ride his bike pard it'll only take ten minutes and you'll be smiling for ages.

Thanks Pete, the 302/306, actually a 302 bored .010" is very little heavier than a 289, but you're right the 289 or Chevy 283 were excellent choices. He has the Saleen Mustang 65mm intake tract, special pistons, and cam, I don't know the cam timing or the compression ratio. It also has the higher flow rated fuel injectors.

PS, I got a 15x6 APC to run on the rebuilt Saito 1.00, I'll report back.

as for an engine for a clone Cobra, I would go Chevy and build my own, it would be one of two engines,
I would start with a Chevy based Dart block with a bore of 4.125,

1) with the Stroke of a 283 (3.00") it would come out to be about 322c.i.d.

2) with the Stroke of a 327 (3.250") it would be around 347c.i.d.

yes yes the bigger your engine the more power you can get out of it, but I have always liked short stroke engines

Ok barry but with the new system you have i get an image properties box pop up with only two choices 'image info' or 'link' and underneath that it asks for a url...not as easy as the old one you had,anybody know how to fix this?

An interesting fudge factor Jim, if you take a V-8 engine with a 4" bore and multiply the stroke by 100 you'll come real close to the actual cubic inches of displacement. The Ford 302 at 4" bore and 3" stroke works out to 300 cubic inches, calculated out it is 301.44. I always thought Ford deliberately made the 300 six with a 3.94" stroke because if they had made it 4" x 4" it would 302 cubic inches like the Waukasha. I think they didn't want two 302's.

Pete, I can't stop looking at this bike, it's fascinating to me.

I have a LASER 1.00 coming in a few days, it's a little longer stroked than a Saito 1.00.
LASER bore==27.7 Stroke==26.9

Saito bore==29.0 Stroke==26.0

I'll certainly compare them, although it will be difficult to determine what factors make them perform differently.

OK Saito gurus this is what's got me a little stumped. I rebuilt a Saito 56 now it doesn't seem to have any more power than 30.

yes they will, you can advanced or retard the timing for better performance, usually only 2 to 6 degrees and 8 degrees in some cases depending on the Cam, advancing increases Low End Power while retarding increases Top End Power,, but on Glow Engines the Teeth Spacing on the Gears are not Fine enough to do it correctly..

yes that's true, and many-many people do not know that Chevy did produce a 302 from 67 to 69, ONLY in the Z/28,,, and,,, put a 400 Crank in a 350 Block and you have a 383..
