hello and good afternoon my RCU Saito friends, I hope you all are doing fine, the scammers called me 4 times this morning all within 1&1/2 hours, that's a new record for them,, any-hoo, I took time out from working on my plane to ask a question of you all,,

so the belly pan on this Wold Models P-40 is made of fiberglass (well that's what it looks like), well it's fit is way off and I am getting it to where it's fitting much better, but it will still have some gaps that I wont be able to get out, the only way to fix that is to add more glass or build up with a filler/sand then paint, I'm not going to do that, the gap is under the plane so it wont bother me a bit, so I am wondering why couldn't I use Silicone to glue the belly pan to the wing ?? the ridge on the belly pan is wide enough to hold enough Silicone so I feel it will hold up in flight and it will fill the gaps,, what you think guys ??

Mike, good luck with the new knee, I have heard people say "it was the best decision they made"

What does everyone here think about using apc props to gauge peak rpm
Pete, well considering that the importer Horizon test's hundreds, maybe even thousands of Saitos with APC props, then APCs will, or do make a good reference point.. I use them for mostly 2 reasons, 1) when I first started to fly most the guys at my field used them, so I used them too, 2) to save money, I didn't want to buy 3 or 4 different brands/and different size all to find in the end I have achieve 1 or 2 ounces of efficacy, yes I admit there could be a better prop to use for ether of my planes, but I just don't wish to buy 4, 5 or 6 different brands and 2 or 3 different sizes to find it.. to add I have used wood props on my larger engines, my 180 4St Magnum ( <good riddance) and my MVVS 35cc..

BTW what's up, don't you guys like the Chevy Nova ??

Jim
if there was no philosophical quotes, then we wouldn't have them would we

Sure Jim, I like the Nova

Props? Heck yes, APC gives something to relate with. Hardly anybody uses Grope-ner props so whatever a Grope-ner turns means little.

Good AM to you Jim, I'll have to pass on the APC numbers, I no longer have any and never flew one. I had a few for testing only.

Did the Velocity Stack arrive yet, a tracking number does not come with a Bubble Pack. It takes a bit of pressure to get the clip to seat for the bolt holes to line up. I switch the original carb mount screws out for 25 mm screws with threadless shoulder on them. Weird huh.

Jim the chevy nova is cool but over here it's like trying to spot a graupner prop on sunday. You could try using sikaflex instead of silicone, clean the mating surfaces with a quick wipe of acetone.

All this talk about harley being in trouble reminds me of our two remaining car manufacturers here in aussie, they are kaput.Tomorrow i'm watching our 'bathurst 1000' race where for the last time aussie made holden v8 (gmh) vs ford with their falcon, next year we will be watching the same race but it will be mustangs and comaro's,thank god the beers still going to be aussie made

I was kidding jim.Re those scammers from nigeria? they have given me a new purpose in life, retirement should never be boring.Since i'm still working and hope to be for quite some time i've only just started answering them back and forth but boy is that gonna be fun. They just love it when you write back

Dave no disrespect, the majority of saito engines sold are small block and most of the discussion here revolves around those small block engines, and here we are discussing the merits of props to suit FLYING performance,do you see my point?

Well Pete, I don't see the reason for that remark, I have far more Saitos below the 100 size than above. As in two 82's, two 62's, three if you count the OS 62-v, two 56's, three if you count the OS 56-a, two FA 40-a's and two of the little 30's, one of which David Mcintire currently has to do one of his video's.

Now, you gents are always are always bragging how APC props rev higher than others, the Graupner G-Sonics I've started using rev higher than equivalent sized APC's, that should make them a superior prop. Maybe I'm missing something though, it has happened. I enjoy the banter we share here.
I think that everyone here agrees that Xoar props rev some 400 rpm slower, (for a given size) than others. A couple of days ago I ran the OS 56-a with a Gaupner GS 13 x 6 ad Xoar 13 x 6, the Xoar blew a 5 wide foot dent in the Soy Beans about 20 feet behind the engine. The Xoar definitely makes more wind. Very scientific, I know.

Default Saito 82

i have a saito 82. How much more power does a saito 91 have than the 82? I’m looking at a 90 size plane with a 75” wing and only weighs eight pounds.

Gar, keep in mind that in the 2 test's Dave posted the 82 was tested with APC props and the 91 was tested with Zinger props,

also, the Saito 91 is a well powered engine, but not made any more, you can still buy them pre-owned NIB for good prices,,

but you did not say what plane or what type of flying, so keep in mind that the Saito 100 is a light engine, it weighs only 2 more grams than the OS AX65 2 Stroke and 42 grams less than the OS 95V 4 Stroke, and is a bit more powerful than the Saito 91,,,

Good Luck

Jim
if you own a Saito engine, you should buy another

Dave, last night you got me thinking on the Graupner G Sonics, next year I will have to try a few, after all, if they turn higher than APC's then you can run more pitch with the Sonics, and, the APC have not been updated in years and years

Jim

Dave i was making a point about comparing FLYING props for small block saito's as opposed to just going on bench running results.I've never bragged about top rpm from apc props mine turn around 9000 rpm ground run on average,i chose apc props BECAUSE they give awesome acceleration in the air,not on the bench.Have you heard anything from your plans supplier?

Gar35 jim has a good point,it's easier to recommend an engine if you know what type of airframe it is and how the owner wants to fly it.

ps jim apc props ain't no born again pard, they got it right the first time

I haven't heard anything yet, Mr. Russell says the shipping to the USA takes 2-3 weeks, I'm being patient. As to the APC props, that's exactly like the OS-f, you can remove an OS-f and install any other plug and nothing changes, swap a Master Airscrew in place of an APC and nothing changes, though I strongly suspect a Xoar pulls harder. I can't prove it. The latest MA are greatly improved also. We'll just have to go with our respective choices and enjoy flying. I need to keep quiet about APC's as I no longer have any so am not entitled to a say in the matter.

I have been seeing a lot of debate over prop brand but I haven't seen any mention of wood or composite. So what material do you guys prefer for your props?

I'm a bit old fashion I prefer wood props. Then again the largest engines I have are a Moki 1.8 and a Super Tigre 3000. The Moki came with a Master Airscrew composite prop on it.

Isn't this thread about engines, not props?

Yes, but an engine is only as good as the prop it is driving.

Dave, if you don't remember me telling about that Magnum 180 4St,, here's the numbers again with the Zoar and APC,,

APC 17X8,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 8850
Xoar 17X8,,,,,,,,,,,,, 8200+
Xoar 17X6,,,,,,,,,,,,, 8650

sorry, I can't remember exactly what the Xoar 17X8 was, but I do remember it was 8200-something,, never the less I found it interesting that the Xoar 17X6 pulled 200 RPM lower than the APC 17X8,, Xoars are hard pulling props

Jim

Mike on the big block saito's i like to run wooden props, they are expensive to crash but you can gather up all the wooden splinters and use them to start the bbq after a few beers.

Dave i don't like your chances about begging off on apc props, that's like saying you once owned a 57 chevy but can't recall a damn thing

Does anyone remember a post and pic of the top rpm spec sheet from saito i put up ages ago about the saito fa30 sc? apparently it pulls 22,000 rpm which got me thinking that i read an article years ago where guys where doing a prop shear to peak the nelson racing two stroke engines, said they got a few hundred extra rpm with the right engine but they blew a few too. Now,just imagine you have a saito fa82 on the bench and it's slobbering rich at full throttle and about 5000 rpm.If you did a prop shear then how many rpm do you think you would see before the 82 went yeah nah,or has somebody already done that?

Last edited by Rudolph Hart; 10-09-2018 at 12:56 AM. Reason: two strokes! :)

Yep, I rermemeber, the Saito 30 S-C

APC 17X8,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 8850
Xoar 17X8,,,,,,,,,,,,, 8200+
Xoar 17X6,,,,,,,,,,,,, 8650

Quite a difference Jim, Thanks

PS, you would never want to run any Saito at 5,000 rpm slobbery rich a t full throttle.
