Thanks for the suggestions on timing the cams guys, the method of checking is great, I now have complete confidence when it leaves the bench.

Jim the fa30sc subject has come up before. This time i'm hoping EVERYONE here will feel free to offer their thoughts or wild conjecture even,as we don't seem to have anyone who has experience running one.

Mirion you always feel more relaxed when you know the cam timing is right,a hard backed razor blade or your wife's credit card is good for holding the cam gear steady too.

With that said I still like the price of the airplane engine they can keep there car engines
Well cap it could be the saito box it comes in,pretty flash eh? OR maybe there's some pretty exotic bits in it..

Jim, I think that charger you selected is made by the same folks as make the charger we presently use . I was going to send you a "Battery Tender" . We have several laying around here that will never see use. The smaller, wall watt type aren't bad but we had issues with the larger ones.

Regarding the timing tool; Over the years I had used about anything handy. Yep the plastic from blister packed goodies, brass shim stock. Paper clips, hobby knife blades, you name it Whatever was close. Most required two hands .
After a while I settled on making something simple, permanent and reusable and something that could be used with one hand. Sometimes I will have 4 or 5?of these engines to assemble at one session.
Took about 10 minutes to make and been in service for along time.

Plenty of good methods mentioned, all get the job done. Just a matter of whatever best suits your wants and needs.

Fred, seen that rev range before. Small engines can rev quite a bit.Be interesting to compare part numbers

I watched a video of that engine in a car, it sounds very two stroke at that rpm.

2,500-22,000 rpm in a 4 stroke??? How do the valves not float at such a high rpm?

I think it has to so with the total mass of the valve and spring. I race a small motorcycle with a four stroke engine. It turns 14500 rpm. I limit it there because the power stops climbing at 13500. There are a number of engines that can turn close to 20000 rpm. It is amazing that things can move that fast.

There are engines that don't rely primarily on springs for valve closing . Can't talk about them however

Before

After, with new Boca Bearings and new gaskets by ICBM and new Revised Saito muffler. I'll test it with a Graupner G-Sonic 12 x 6. The non Swak will be removed

Perhaps stiffer springs and cam profile allow higher rpms too?

Boy those black Saitos sure look nice. Makes me want to just paint one black myself.

For mechanical things, IMHO, bare metal is honest
A fine metal finish is a thing of beauty..Even with clearcoat.

Yea Dave, That goop job needs help!

Ok
here you go, question of the day. I am going to mix up some FAI fuel and was wondering why one can’t use Royal purple synthetic 2 stroke oil in the methanol.

Be nice.

It may not mix with methanol. Generally PAG type will, Ester types will not, unless they contain PAG oils. And then, not always.
In other words, better check first

With the exception of my 2 Irvine 53’s all of my engines are honest then. 😂

Irvine?
I bought a couple at the Toledo RC expo around 1983. Later bought one for my son's RC car, he still has that one.
The paint was the one thing I didn't like. Nice running engines! Too much trouble to strip and finish so I traded them for Super Tigre S-40s.

Really, I liked them a lot.

Pete, I think the 30sc has a built in Nitrous set up in it with the 82's cam, but the owners are not talking, when I asked one guy he just said>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "the sky's the limit",,, but I was thinking "but a RC car run's on the ground",,,, I guess it's not for me to know..

Pete,,,,,, you know I thought I would be slick, smarter than the average bear, I would put my OS Hyper 50 Heli engine in a plane, I mean> knowing how the Heli engine is so much more powerful than the plane engine, some slick stuff right there, man,,
so I went on doing so, the plane> that Worlds Models P-40.. well the Hyper carb is big, bigger than some 61 plane carbs,, so to get more consistent running I would use the older and slightly smaller Heli cab,, I had everything to go, and just before I installed the engine on the plane I found-out that the Plane engine has the SAME Liner as the heli engine, dang, and the plane carb is the same size as the older Heli carb,,,,,,,, my bubble was busted

hey now, the plane engine twist's an APC 11x8 at 11,000, with that larger Heli carb and huge GMS muffler I could go up in pitch, yeeaa, a 11x9, maybe even an 11x10,, yeeaa, that's the ticket

Thumbs up

go back 25 pages or so and read what I said about "High Ratio Rocker Cams", yes stiff springs help, but these "High Ratio Rocker Cams" have "LESS" lift and a much broader Nose than Traditional Automotive Flat Tappet Cams have, the Lifter rides on the broad nose very smoothly, this improving stability of the system.
the stock 200HP Chevy 350 with a flat tappet cam uses a Rocker Ratio of about 1.4:1,, a "High Ratio Rocker Cam" or "Mushroom Lifter Cam" can use a Rocker Raito well over 2:1..
take a given Traditional flat tappet street cam, add 1.7: 1 roller rockers, it can get you 600" valve lift, yet a High Ratio Rocker Cam with the same Duration can get you to 700" valve lift and still have the stability to stay together for a 500 mile race
the "High Ratio Rocker Cam" or "Mushroom Lifter Cam" is the between, between the Roller Cam and the Traditional Automotive Flat Tappet Cam,
Roller Cams are great for producing great power... but for road racing (and I am sure Garry knows this> ) Racers have found out that the bearings in Roller Lifters do not hold up as well as Solid Flat Tappet Lifters do.. but Isky is now make a non-bearing Roller Lifter, the price is sky high

Wink

Dave buddy, you sure do have a way with the engines

Garry, I will order the Solar today, but man, yesterday I had another bad phone day, I do not get these people, and it was Battery Tender this time, I just had 2 questions about their 20 amp charger, and then the women with her questions got me into talking this and that and why, well at one point I told her that when I brought back my battery to Interstate they checked that my Alternator was charging, and my God she did not believe me that Interstate did that for me, she went on about that a couple more times, she thought I was lying !!!, I insured her they did, then I told her that my friend did a Parasitic Amp draw test too, she said she did not know what that was, I tried to tell her about the test and she said she never heard of that test and she told me that she was NOT going to talk about it.. I was polite but I got off the phone. yes I was a bit annoyed, so I called back to make a complaint about how I was treated AND to tell them I was not going to buy their product because of that women.. I had to leave a message, I got a call back and the guy quickly started an argument with me about the Parasitic Amp draw test, I was thinking WTH and told the guy I was not going to buy their product, and LOL I called the guy an ***** and hung up..

what I told my wife after that call, is that I believe these manufactures just do not want to be questioned about their products, they just want us to buy and not ask questions, they just don't care if the product fits our needs or not, just don't ask questions, just buy more.

.as for the Solar model I am ordering, it has 2, 6 and 10 amps settings (and 100 amps for starting in the cold with a dead battery), this will fit my bill better than a charger with just 2 and 20 amps for charging

Jim
Saito Engines,, looking forward
