Did the weather conditions change by the last flight? Humidity levels rise, perhaps? Sometimes a weather change can have a profound effect on the tuning.

Was a great day, 85 and sunny. It was a huge change in the motor, I'm thinking of starting with changing all the fuel tubing and making sure there is no air leaks anywhere.

I have a silly question. I have a Saito 65 on a trainer. It seems to run ok, problem is that the HS needle can almost be removed. Being that it is a trainer and run at half throttle or less most of time it is not a big deal. Tank is on CL, no leaks that i can find anywhere, replaced intake o-ring. HS needle moves rather easily even with spring clip tight. Is there an o-ring on the HS needle housing that could be missing or should I look elsewhere? I belive it is an older engine.

Best bet: You have a leak OR a restriction some where between clunk and venturi.

Tank is brand new. I plugged one line and blew threw the other line prior to fueling and starting engine. I'm guessing that there is a problem from the carb in. Engine runs and idles great. How do you check to see if engine is drawing properly or where the leak or blockage could be. Could a vacum gage be put on carb inlet and and cranked over to check the draw. Also what numbers would you look for on vacum or compression for that matter?

The easiest way to check the tank is to submerge it in water with enough fuel line for you to blow into while holding the other tight ( of course if you are running a third hold both) see if there are any bubbles coming from the tank seam or plug. If not, install the tank with all new fuel lines. If the problem persist then you know the issue is within the engine.

A 16oz tank for a .56 is a lot of fuel!!! I would say too much.

I haven't run a filter yet. I have a stack on my .72. A 16 oz tank on that would be too much too.

GREAT ENGINE!!!!

Bill, the FA 82 started easily at the field using an electric started and I run 2 tanks flawlessly with a very rich setting, and even though I was impressed w/ the thrust turning an APC 14x4w. No need to worry now and I expext to have a great FA82 + H9 Twist combination. Thanks.

New engine? That sounds like you have a stuck inlet valve. It’s been found before on new engines that have spent a lot of time in the box before sale.

Pull both rocker covers, check the valve clearance and if a valve is stuck you’ll see it. Use some raw fuel to free it. Set both valves to 0.0015” clearance, then soak both sides with after run oil before putting the covers back on.

Just got off the phone to Horizon. Dennis Davenport is the “Good guy” there, he said they could ship some things to Oz, he was pretty sure Saito parts were OK.

A quick guess says yiu don't have the throttle fully open - the HS needle has little to no effect at part throttle.

If you have this insensitivity at full throtle then almost without quetion you have a problem with fuel delivery to the engine.

Additional note: I was talking to Dennis about a pair of new FA-82a engines I just got, and wanted inlet stacks for them. He said the SAI50GK93 stack was out of stock, but he expects more in about ten days. Plenty of the Bru-Line air filters on hand though.

If you watch the video in the link below, you will understand why I want to fly for so long without landing . I am building a smaller version of what you see in the video, powered by the Saito 56. My typical flight is an hour with the setup in the video, I hope that with a Velocity stack and filter I can get almost as long with the smaller plane and the .56

My number goes up and down, at the moment with the two FA-82a engines I just got I’m at eight. And two airplanes account for four of them. A pair of HC FA-120s on a Cessna Bobcat, and the new 82 engines going on the Twin-Air 60 I’m assembling now.

Just got back from california with two more saitos. And 80 GK I got from my old man and a brand new 50GK I got from Sheldon's. I had been in the case forever and he gave a pretty good price on it. $150.

Don't have any use for them but what the heck? Never can own too many engines.

Howdy folks! I have been a member in good standing of the U-Can-Do 46 thread. I recently bought my first Saito, a FA-82a and I am in love!!! Here is an exerpt of one of my posts about this engine!


"I thought I had some nice engines but this Saito 82 is the finest example I have ever owned. I am so glad that I decided to go with it, I would have never been this happy about the choice of power for my UCD than anything else. Now I understand why you guys with Saitos suggested it. Wish I had all of the Saitos! I especially like the twins, would love a Piper Cub with one in it for lazy flying!"

"I ran it on the Cool Power 30% tonite and even my 11 year old said, "wow dad, that thing is running with more pep on that fuel" so that says a lot. He rarely misses ANYTHING. He is right too, it ran like a bat out of you-know-where! I did just what you said and it just seemed to fall into a groove. Absolutely no hesitation of any kind from idle to 8k. Pure power and I swear it even sounds better with the 30% fuel. More growl. That sure made a difference, I'll be running it on that fuel from now on..."
As you can see, I am a new devotee of the Saito engine. It was a big decision to choose a motor for a plane I have had for two years before building (I am in no hurry to do anything, obviously) and I can honestly say that I am so happy to have this motor that the plane has become secondary! (OK, no flames from the UCD 46 bunch! I can't help it!)

Please, is there a "seat" for me on the Club Saito bus? I'm packed and ready to go, not quite more than one Saito yet, but then I am just getting started into the world of fine quality four strokes...

Wow. Bliss, with an application like that how could anyone deny you a seat in the club house?
