guys, what take more servo power, the Rudder or the Elevator, I have been told that it's always the rudder that needs more servo power

my Midget Mustang's Span is 59 inches, it's elevator has more area than the rudder, but usually for sport flying the rudder is deflected more than the elevator, this is why I have been told that it's always the rudder that needs more servo power,

whats the skinny you guys say about this

thanks guys

I never thought about that Jim, in most applications I give the servo a mechanical advantage over the control surface since I consider slower to be smoother.

me too, but I am just trying to use up the servos I have, I would like to put the most powerful one where it will be needed the most for sport flying

How fast is that Midget Mustang Pylon plane going to be flying? Plan on doing knife edges? Is the tail wheel steered by the rudder? All things to consider.

I know, I have a bunch of Futaba S-48's or similar that I got in planes given to me. They immediately get replaced with JR/Spektrums or HiTecs.

PS, Jim which Mustang do you have, I searched for 59 incher and couldn't find one. Thanks

With a tail dragger, you want a strong rudder servo to counteract the ground forces on the tail wheel, and depending on the plane, there may be more surface area on the rudder than the elevator. My P-47 uses two elevator servos, and the rudder uses one, all three have pretty much the same surface area. I actually need to replace them, I used MPI servos and have had a bad reliability rating, bought 10, 4 failed on the work bench. Rather than risk it, going to replace them with Hitech 645MG.

Dave, it's the World Models Midget, please don't buy one (see my link), it's as bad as my world World Models .46 size P-40,, the mustang came with one wing's airfoil 1.5mm thicker that the other side. the covering is pure garbage, there was something else wrong with it but I can not remember as of now.. and the cowl has a ripple in it..

Airborne-Models

acdii and Lonnie,
I have no idea how fast it will fly, it's wing is no thinner than any other .60 size plane I have seen. all my planes have been tail draggers, and I have never had a problem with steering, I had .70oz Hitechs on the tail of my 4 Star 60, never a problem,
I asked the same question on RCU's "Questions page" and I like the 2nd answer, it makes since to me, the rudder needs more power because it has to control the whole length of the fuselage while the elevator controls a balanced plane.

Wasp
i wonder what’s up with that. I have had three of the world models planes. The midget, p51. And an extra.
All of them flew great and the P51 was clocked over 120 mph. Sorry guys I used a Rossi 60 on a pipe.
Wold liked to get another and put my Saito 65 with the 80 carb. That would be fun.

Jim, I see your intent is to put your fa100 in that WMMM, with right prop it's going to be a 110+ mph plane. I'd put 90+ in oz servos on the rud and elev.

I've had the same experience as Crunchy with my 46 size WM P51, very good craftsmanship except for the retract strut wires and the retract mounts in the wing. Not well suited for grass fields in the stock config. I got it used with a 70 surpass, not my choice for engines but it does fly nicely.

yeeaa, people keep saying TWM's planes fly great, but I can't say how they fly, my problems were from manufacturing, nothing like being disappointed in 2 planes of the same brand as much as I have been even before the engines have been mounted. when I have more time I will type out a list

Airborne Hobbies told me if I buy another plane from them they will give me their highest discount on it, I would like to buy another Midget Mustang for my K&B 100 so my son and I can race each other, but I don't think I have the mind to buy another WM plane, not now anyways

Lonnie, we have the servos, we have the technology, we can do this, 110 MPH, that's fast enough

Sig 1/5th scale with a Saito 100. 10' off the ground going pure vertical like and F15. If I push it, it will do 110, once.

geezz, the base (round part) of the throttle arm was hitting on the bolt that holds the engine mount to the engine wall, I had to mill .200" off the mount, now there is .035" between the bolt and throttle arm base, I guess TWM wasn't thinking people was going to put the Saito 100 in their M-Mustang. if I turned the Carb around the HSN would have hit the bolt too, but at that I would have had trouble with the throttle cable.. the mount is now 7.5mm thick, I'm sure the mount will hold up, but I will keep an eye out for cracks, if it cracks I will have to get an aluminum engine mount.

as for my servos, I will buy some stronger ones

Lonnie, I'm sorry about your plane, but I agree with FlyerInOKC, get it back together, but this time get some insurance on it and just crash it again, and then buy another new Saito with the insurance money

The blue plastic servo control rods held up nicely lonnie,to be fair a good pilot can do that much damage on the taxi strip put an old plastic shopping bag in the rear fuse,it's easier to bag the bits and carry them back to the pits...plus it keeps all the secretly joyful club armchair pilots in suspense, serves them right.

Jim, when I encounter that problem I countersink the bolt as I did on the 20 sized Cessna 150 here. You can't see exact detail but the socket head is nearly all inside the mount.

Saito FA 30 s on Cessna 150-20 sized.

Big change at our house today, or maybe a little change. Our daughter in law brought home a giant 4 pound 11 ounce boy, His name is Hunter. He weighs 1.4 oz more than a Saito FG 60. So tiny I haven't held him yet. My wife is in her glory. If I needed another Saito I'm sure she could be conned.
