thanks Dave for the "Hole in the baffle info", I will remember that incase some one ever talks/ask about that smoking problem. I wonder if Randy knew about that problem, or if he just removes the baffles on all the 100 Aro Engines he sells just for the increase in power.
BTW, the 100 Aro carb is one nice looker!

well guys, as nice as it looked on the outside I paid too much for this engine. it has been run a lot. as far as I am concerned I have to replace the 100 GK's cylinder and piston errr.
the piston skirt is scratched up, I may be able to rub a lot of it out with honing compound but it's just too ugly. the cylinder is scratch good. there are 3 or 4 deep scratches I can feel. the guy that sold it to me said his uncle always ran his engines richer than any one. and the liner is dark in color while my 91's liner is bright and shiny. I don't know what type of fuel he used.
you know how a scratch will raze metal. that is how these deeper scratches felt on my finger. but I wondered if it was just a buildup of dried or burned oil, so I cleaned the cylinder with denatured alcohol. and the build up was removed. but still I can feel the deeper scratched with my finger. so I feel the cylinder should be replaced.
Hu, funny how the ring would not remove that build up I could feel with my finger ?
in the photos you can see some newer "cross scratches" in the liner. they must have come from when I cleaned the cylinder.
the ring photo was taken as the ring lay on a white box.

in the 2nd photo you can see where the ring rubbed on the edge of the deeper/larger scratch.
LOL isn't that piston ugly! see the blotches, the aluminum is razing/curling up., I wonder if these pistons have a thin layer on them.
the ring photos are hard to take because I had to hold the Scope. what you see of the ring is it's outer edge that rides the liner. it looks rusted. you can see nicks on the lower edge.

oop, forgot. here is the 4-Star 120 with the Saito 120 with the CH ignition. he said the engine has only 6 flights on it. but who known, but it's sure worth the 200. the plane is clean..
in the background you can see the tail of the old Miss Las Angeles I had. the glue was bridal. I could simply pull some of it apart. so I cut the tail off, when it gets warm I will glue it to the wall in my garage. I'll get a photo of it LOL. behind the tail you can see the wing to my 100MPH 57" span Worlds Models P-40. it has the OS Hyper 50 Heli engine in it with an over size stock type muffler. that engine is basically a stock OS 50sx with a large Heli carb. and that carb makes that engine run extremely well, and with that muffler it turns an APC 11x8 peaked out at 13800 (on 20% Nitro. for the shorter crank all I needed was a shoulder Nut.
my Man Cave was once the downstairs TV room. but when the kids started getting older and older and stayed in their rooms more it was used less and less, so I took it over heehee

That is unfortunate but sadly the risk we all take when buying used engines. I wonder if some of that damage occurred when people turn over the engine while it’s all gunked up?
As ugly as the piston may be to you it’s probably fine. New liner and piston ring should make it like new but I’d first clean it up and see how much compression you have. Perhaps if you ran castor fuel compression will improve as the varnish would fill in the scratches.

Yessir, $200 is a real good price. The Four Star 120 is a worthy classic and those CH conversions are a fine package.
Should bring you many hours of low $$$$ flying.
But nothing like that 100 MPH Mustang

I've been finding interesting stuff here lately while doing some clean up/out. An OS fuel cutoff valve. It's apparently very precise, I attached a squeezed Sullivan 16 oz fuel bulb and it did not leak air into it.

thanks guys for the good words about my 4-Star.
I will be buying some servos for it LOL, I found the guy has 44oz servos on the ailerons, LOL a bit small.
for the tail he was using two 236oz @ 6v MG Robot servos. the brand is "Power HD". while they sure are strong enough I don't know how they will stand up to the plane's vibration. these servos sell for $20 (I searched them last night).
they are Analog, I think they are made by JR. I am going to research them on the net for reviews.
kind of funny that a machinist that has flow RC for 40 years would use a $20 servo on a 120 size plane. hummm, maybe he knew something we don't ?? having to buy new servos or not, it's still a good deal.
any one know anything about Power HD servos ??

How much you want for it?
Probably a fuel cutoff valve for pylon racing engines which generally had no carburetor.

Power HD 1501 Servo, Torque 236 @ 6V.
well, I have read some 40 or more reviews (on Online Stores) from people that have bought these servos. every one loves them because they work, they are reliable, they are powerful, and they are ,,,,,,, LOL cheap. many people said they were using them on 30cc and larger planes. one of these online stores had over 20 reviews.
I only read 3 complaints.
1) the servo turned both left and right one time and it didn't work again.
2) the servo did not center well.
3) I believe this servo was in a robot, because the owner said it over heated because he held it under a load for a long time. sorry I don't remember the length of time he said. but here in my thoughts the time he held it under a load was much longer than we do with our planes.
I really don't feel I want to buy more of these servos. I just have that need to trust the 2 I have LOL.
Now, my question for my Saito friends. do you guys think review on the Online Stores are genuine ? or do you think that reviews are written and posted by the Online stores ?

No bearings in the Main Roro Head to twist the blades for cyclic, just big rubber bushing as I was told by an X Apache pilot.

No Jim, I don't. Ironically I just installed a full set in a GP 1350 pt17. I bought them years back with an arf from Troy Bilt. They said they were the best recommendation for the ESM P47. It was a mid to upper end plane. So I bit on em. I sold the project but retained the servos. My OS FR 300 five cyl. will pull it along like a rocket. Hopefully these servos perform well...

Aaron,
Still have that Gunning Japanese warbird?
I think it was called a "Chuck" (?) I just found an old WW-2 ex War Dept book with specs and drawings of all Japanese war planes .
Remind of the plane's name and I will copy that info for you.
