It's fairly simple, in the post WWII/Korea era newer overseas steel plants were built, expanded, and modernized in the following decades. Meanwhile instead of updating and replacing the US plants companies like Pittsburg and Steel X spent the money on giving short term dividends to shareholders and ever fattening salaries to management. US heavy steel consuming industries either purchased cheaper overseas steel or move their own manufacturing overseas. Then came computers and the internet that made it possible to use the "just in time" system of ordering raw materials, gone were the stockpiles manufacturers use to keep on hand and had tying capital. Again, shareholders got bigger dividends and executives got an even greater increase in compensation. Now COVID-19 comes along to throw a mammoth size monkey wrench into the system. COVID shut down entire cities and regions in China and still have all the major ports tied up in knots. This shut off cheap steel and other products. Chinese suppliers shutdown, went bankrupt, etc. slowing and in some cases outright stopping the flow of goods they export.
Power creates greed, not industry.
Been out of the be loop for a while folks. The internet gods allowed me back in advertently. Sorry Mike, tripped on that assessment. No offense meant. Been voting since the seventies. Seen this with own eyes and ears. Clearly. Skepticism breeds clarity. Only believe what I see hear and verify. . Clear eyed. Not open minded.

Hello again Saito Savers Society! This time it is my trusty FA-72B that needs TLC. I'll start with bearing replacement. I was surprised at how bad the bearings had got without it complaining too much. But a rough idle gave it away. The main bearing has a steel cage where you cannot see the balls (28x15x7mm wide) and the front bearing has red plastic seals (22x8x7mm wide). The main bearing is a bit rough but the front is downright hard to turn! Could someone here recommend a favorite supplier and/or type of bearings I should use? I remember one shop called Boca Bearings but not sure what type bearings to purchase besides just by size? My manual specifies 6520A and 6522A bearings but I don't know if that is just a Saito part number or a type of bearing as well.

Yep, or the cheaper Boca economy bearings #ENK-030. The cheaper ones are hard chrome with no rubber seals but work just fine too. I'm not sure why Boca no longer carries standard hard chrome bearings with rubber seals. They used to.

Supply Chain woes, probably can't get them from China anymore.
Not just China though, I have a Hydraulic kit I ordered last November, its a 3rd function plus quick attach remote kit from Kubota. It is made in Japan, and it might arrive towards the end of the year.
If you can find something that works today, don't hesitate, get it.

I saw an article online about the major shipping ports are experiencing a lot of disruption from cyber attacks. Couple that with the ports being so overloaded and unable to catch up its no wonder you can't get a lot of stuff.

May as well ask now... Looking at the manual, and engine, the timing mark on the cam gear will go to 6 o'clock when mated to the crankshaft at 12 o'clock, TDC. Any clever way to do that? I'm thinking that looking at it from the front and then installing the front bearing after is the way to go, but usually I heat the case and then install the bearings before the crankshaft. One of those things where there might be a neat solution that I would never think of on my own.

Never mind. YouTube coughed up a few assembly timing videos. I liked the one where the guy uses a rubber band to hold the crank at TDC and a paintbrush to hold the cam. Clever.

Over here I just go to a local bearing supplier with the old bearings and the crankshaft, he mikes the crank and old bearings and pulls me a new set off the shelf. Make sure the rear bearing is fully seated when you replace the old one.

I have one better yet. I bought 2 strainers the were in New Jersey in stock they told me 4 weeks delivery. I could only imagine a 95 year old guy with a walker going to the back of the warehouse to get them.
