OK Saito friends, is this the correct antifreeze for cooking engine parts to clean them up. dedicated crock pot coming today. If this is suitable I'll pick up a jug. It's ethylene glycol, made by Valvoline.

Just as I wasn't concerned in the least where the tailstock spindle for my chuck was made, while that seemed to be a major issue to you

On the ofher hand, I do use my lathe a lot, keeping it alive is just the start, preserving and maintaining accuracy are also important.


One of those better than nothing situations I guess. At least you looked it up and got a price

Gary, a week ago. I was cleaning, reoiling and tightening up the swivel base ways and cross slide ways. LOL I broke the Lead nut for the cross slide. it was cracked and broke in my hand.
for a week I have been looking for a new one. the only one I could find is made in China/I don't want it! so I looked and looked and then 2 days ago I look on Ebay and there it is, and made in the USA. the money is going out tomorrow. it's $38 more. I'm snagging it, cause I'm happy it's made in the USA

I am curious as to what that piece does, I'd like to see a picture, Thanks The little 1.5 qt. crock pot is perfect, it was 13 bucks and the antifreeze was 13 bucks also. I may be able to paint the 150 cylinder today, the valves are good, I can choose among eight valves I have two of the big block rocker covers I can use to, "mask" the rockers. They are skinned up some, Gary's kindness paid off again.

I've been cleaning stuff, the cylinder is virtually spotless, one hour on low yesterday, one on high followed by 2 hours on low, the baked on stuff just flowed off as I removed it from the crock pot. There is no chance that I can paint today, there is a big storm going on right now, the humidity is off the charts.

I cleaned the two center mufflers on the lathe.

Pretty clean, Dave. Just a few spots left. You don't need high heat to remove that baked on carbonized crud. A long cook for 24 to 48 hours at 170°f will remove all of it. It will also loosen the exhaust carbon in the exhaust port enough that lacquer thinner and Qtips will work, with some patience.

Dave, in my link; wrong lathe, but the same Cross Slide/same Saddle. scroll down to page 38. see part #804. the nut mounts to the underside of the Cross Slide and th3e Lead Scrw pulls and pushes the nut/slide forward and back.

my Cross Slide is the same but mine does not have the thrust bearings.

Where did the Taiwan nut break?
Possibly at the base of the attachment boss(?)
Taiwan makers source many parts from China, as do many Japanese engine makers. Even Ford, GM and Harley Davidson.

I go thru Berrian Springs often. There is a fellow there that supplies parts to the local guy I bought my Clausing (USA) lathe from.

Keep them lubed properly and they can outlive several owners.

Dave, lathes can be use for other good things.
I have used mine with,
1) a Drum Sander or Flapping Sander.
2) a Wire Wheel.
3) a Grinding Wheel.
4) Carbite Berr.
5) and many times I have taken Round Stock of different sizes and tape Sandpaper to it to make just the right size Drum Sander.

I have also turned wood on it. mostly to make those Drum Sanders.
of course it's a good idea to cover the ways with a rag when using all these things.

it broke at the bottom of the slot. the problem was that the Adjustment Set Screw did not have a Tapered Tip (but it does now ) so the Set Screw was pushed down on the nut instead of pushing sideways on the nut.

LOL here is the same lathe, sold under Enco., a newer model made in China. even has the same toolbox.

My late, long time friend, Indian Wally bought one of the AL-51 versions when they were sold here by Wholesale Tool in Warren, MI. He made a lot of stuff on that lathe. IIRC, the only part that ever broke was a cast iron spur gear that lost a tooth fairly early on. The Wholesale Tool people gave Wally a new gear along with a new mating pinion, no questions asked. Wally passed away last year at age 95. One of his daughters probably took the lathe to her shop! The old guy kept it like new.

Yep, a great tool to have around. LOL!

From the apron layout, it looks like the Chinese assembled versions were made for left handed operators

Yes to both, I saw a tail piece on here that you made, so I said, why not. Mine is kind of bulky compared the the stocker. Inside it is exactly like the stock tail piece.
If I paint it today I'll do it in the shop where the AC knocks the humidity down.

Thanks Jim for the detail on that, I sure enjoy my little one. When I made the crankshaft spacer, that was the first time to cut steel, I expected it to chatter some but it never made a sound.

The 150 cylinder is painted, I made myself a high quality paint booth, hobby paint booths run from 125 to 500 bucks, I said, forget that. What look like flaws are just reflections of something.

I didn't want to paint the RH 80 or the toaster oven behind the paint booth.
