Any of the mounts will break. I've never had a plastic mount break except in a bad crash. I had one aluminum mount break from fatigue just flying around.

In a crash, it's better for your engine mount to break than tear the firewall out?

Agreed, Jim.

To add my own $.02, I also use wood props for the same reason... In a crash, some of that energy will go into breaking the props and obviate some of the energy that might go into breaking the firewall/mounts.

If the prop doesn't break in a crash, that energy has to go somewhere... and that somewhere is into the mounts, engine pieces, firewall, etc.

Dave Brown and GP offer reinforced plastic mounts for up to 1.20 size engines. I'm not sure if these will work well with the Saito 180? I checked Dave Patrick's site http://www.davepatrickmodels.com/frame.htm but could not see any engine mounts?

is 7 gals of fuel alot of use? he says it has lots of power. i assume by then, the engine should be completely broken in and run quite smooth. right? plenty of life left in it. is most wear in the ring, not the cylinder? is it safe to hand prop the 180. i hand prop my .82 as directed on this thread, prime and flip backwards (w/chicken starter), seems to work everytime.

i didn't think so (just good, and broken in), just wanted to hear it from a more experienced saito owner.

i came ascross a picture of a 180, unless i was mistaken, the exhaust came out the left side not the right side. is that possible?

the exhaust comes out the same as yur 82 (right side on a upright engine) just a little towards the rear is the only difference

Hello all, I have been following along now and then and I would like to join this elite owners club. Sign me up. My name is Harold Andrews. I am 61 yrs old and been in this hobby since reeds, rubber band escapements. and galloping ghosts. Now some of you will not know what the heck I am talking about, but there are those of you who will. I currently own 3 saitos. a .65 a .72 and a .80 hi cam. I love these engs. They are the best and I dont think anyone other eng can match the power of the Saito. Can I join?

From a conventional viewpoint, all Saito single cylinder engines have the exhaust coming out the right side. Some are straight, some are angled to the rear.

Unless you have a custom engine, maybe set up for symmetric engines in a twin, another for reversed rotation... See picture.

I'm only 52 but I know what you mean -- my first RC set was a single-channel super-regen set with a nice rubber-powered escapement. I've still got an OS Pixie super-regen set with a couple of escapements here and one day I'll put them into something.

I then built my own GG set from scratch (worked surprisingly well) before buying one of the very first Futaba proportional sets which had those cool servos with the two linear outputs. All-up flying weight for a set of 4-ch gear was exactly a pound (gasp!).

Of course we used ST, Merco, Mills and a range of other engines -- but 4-strokes (like the lovely Saitos (keeping on topic:-)) were just a dream. In fact I doubt anyone would have even thought it possible to make a practical model-sized 4-stroke engine back then, let alone an electric-powered model of the type we see today.

Ah... the good old days, when the summers were longer, the air was calmer and the beer tasted better :-)

i had to ask, i saw a pic in the rcu classifieds, i swear it looked to have the exhaust on the opposite side. however not the engine i intend to purchase.
the explainations are appreciated.

Here is another thing to consider - in this day of digital software imaging, it is very easy (and unintentional) to make things appear to be something very different. Here is Bill's pic "flipped" 180 degrees, the exhaust now appears to be one the normal side. Perhaps the pic of the Saito 180 that you saw was flipped too. And for the record, I am NOT suggesting that Bill did that to his pic.

This reminds me of a pic I saw of a guitarist on the cover of a music mag in mid 1970's. The guy was a well known right handed player but somewhere in the printing room of the magazine, they accidently placed the film negative the wrong way around & "hey presto", Billy Blogs became a left hand guitarist.

Print reversal is definitely possible, that's why I had the other engine showing in the foreground. Note the intake and exhaust on it - opposite to the other engine. No photoshop on this one, but I admit to using it often to emphasize a point when needed.

I think I read somewhere in this long post that WR suggested when you are the new to you owner to check the valves anything else to look for before starting the first time! She looks brand new in the box the tool package has not even been opened but has been run and crashed and sent back to Horizon who gave it a clean bill of health all of this was done by the previous owner. Going to put this in a KMP Adreniline... This is the 125 I have. Also I hope i can join the club you guys have!!!!!

Question please just installed my saito 125 into my seafury .Dont want a big cigar sticking out of the cowl .My fix at this time is to purchase a Mac products 90 degree bend, attach it to the engine , that will bring the muffler in about 3/4 of an inch , I think I can route the muffler exaust in a scale manner with that attachment . Is that my best solution ???

Jeb , I bench ran the engine , it was easy to start and achive low reliable idel .SO far so good .
This is one of two saito 125 that I now own .
I also have the 180 , new in box waiting to be installed in my CMP P40 .

The Saito 125 has it's own exhaust size of 13mm. They make a 90 degree adapter themselves. Here it is....

The Saito break in and numbers, this engine eerily smooth and very quick to rev.

Saito .62a
Prop====Bolly=13.5x6
Fuel==1st tank==WildCat 10% nitro/18%/80/20 syn/castor blend
Plug===Saito SS
My usual procedure, I started it at what I thought was a 4,000 rpm setting, it ran at 3,100, I let it run at that for about 2 minutes, switched off the glow power expecting it to quit, it didn't, I then increased it to 4,000, after 10 minutes at the new setting it was running 4,600.

10 minutes at 4,000
10 minutes at 5,000, leaned LS needle 1/2 turn from picture #1
10 minutes at 5,500
10 minutes at 6,000, slowed to 3,500 for remainder of tank 8 minutes, total run time on first 16oz tank 48 minutes.

Refilled tank with PowerMaster 15%/18%/80/20
10 minutes at 7,000
Full peak power 9,330 rpm The TNC and GloBee readings are the same, the camera just can't see the TNC screen very well. I believe this engine is quickly going to gain a reputation for frugality on fuel.

At first I thought, why would anybody want an engine that size, now I think it will earn its own place. I have a friendly understanding with my LHS that when a new Saito comes out I get the first one, I was hesitant about this one but said, yeah, send it up, now I'm glad. I hope some experienced Saito .65 guys chime in.
