Then your the man to ask.
I have a Saito 72 I need to replace the front seal/bearing on. It's spraying a little fuel around inside the cowling of my Stearman. I put bearings in it last year, and I was told to remove the rearward seal of the front bearing, which I did, and it has been leaking since.
2 questions...
1- Can the front bearing be replaced by pulling it out forward, is there a tool for that ? or maybe heat the case snout and grab the center race with hemo's or a hook or something ?
2- Should I have not removed the rearward seal of the front bearing as I was told ? Is that why it leaks there ? Or do you think I may have damaged the remaining seal during the bearing installation ? Dennis

I have some Saito's that I just have a shield on one side of the front bearing. Yes they have a snotty nose. At least I know it's getting oil up through there. It's when the oil stops that I'm going to worry?

Old Saito's had a shielded bearing both sides in the rear and a double rubber seal in the front.

The last few years they have had a open bearing in the rear and a double rubber seal in the front.

If it were my engine I would leave it alone until the bearing went bad.

You cannot get the bearing out the front with the crank in the engine.

I know what you mean about the engs. I used to have an old Thor ignition that had a nasty habit of eating fingers, no electric starters back then and everyone started them with their fingers. If you did not have the timing adjusted just right watch out. I wonder how many out there have ever covered a plane with silk?

I have and it eventually rots just about like silkspan.

I was in the old home place where I grew up last year and up in the back of the attic I found one of my old R/C wings covered with silk from around 1960. Except for dust, it still looked good but I was afraid to touch it. I sold the house. I assume the wing is still there?

I did have a Flite Streak (that a friend owns now) that I covered with Monocoat in 1969. It still looks as good as the day it was covered 37 years ago. He flies it every once and a while. In fact, the day I sold it to him, he put fuel in the thing and flew it. It hadn't been run in 35 years at that time. I didn't remember it flying that fast?

I got out of the hobby for several years and when I retired 7 years ago my kids got together and bought me a new plane for Christmas. It did not take long to get the bug again. Now where we built our house is only one mile down the road from our R/C field. I just finished a modified Senior Kadet and have the Saito 80 on it. I have just finished the balance on it and have not had a chance to maiden it yet. I also have a plane called a Lucy from Polk Hobbies that is only about 3 1/2 lbs. with the Saito 72 and it will do anything you ask it to do. The other plane is a LT-40 with the Saito 65.

I don't know if you'd class me as an experienced '65 guy but I've had one of the first ones to arrive in the UK. I just love that engine it's been in a load of different models and just purrs on and on. Guess I'm gonna have to get a '62 just for comparison purposes, perhaps SWMBO will understand that?

In the attached picture my model is the ratty one in the rear with my '65 exhausting down a piece of ali tube down the side of the fuse almost scale like. This was taken at a public display in the early 80's the front model, belonging to a clubmate, I believe had an OS 40, both are still airworthy

Thank you ! I ordered a front bearing, but now I will save it until I do em all. I figure that I must have damaged the seal on installation. Im use to workin on much bigger stuff I guess. I need more tiny tools now... Thanks for your knowledge !!!

Well I got her running the garage is kinda dark but you can sure hear it hehehehehehe anyhow does this sound about right I don't have a Tach just yet but she sure transtioned pretty good I thought that is on 30% Coolpower needs a touch of castor. Just wanted to hear her run My First 4 Stroke OHHH so sweet hehehehe and powerful!!!! I had a chair holding the fuse pulled it along LoL

i'm thinking about getting a saito .72. my os 70 fs II will turn both a 13x6 and 14x4w over 10k. could i expect the same rpm w/saito .72? it'd be nice to save 5 ounces.

The book says 2000 to 12000 rpm, and it lists 11x9 to 15x4 prop size... I run a 13x6 on my 40 size Super Stearman.

That's funny with the plane pulling the chair.

The .72 will turn an APC 13x6 at 10,600 RPM using Omega 15%.

Hobbsy- did your 125 break in like the other Saitos or did it take longer? Mine went through a period of vibrating hard enough to shake my deck. I have my engine mount on a B&D Workmate and out on the deck. This has been a rough running engine for a while. It idles pretty low at 2700 RPM but looks like it is still in the initial break in period after 40 minutes. Just wondering about how yours broke in......

Barry, here is a trick you could try to smooth it out, if you have a rigid throttle rod, peak the top at absolute peak, maybe 50 rpm rich from peak and then go to the lowest idle you can get, hold the throttle so it won't move and lean the LS screw a little at a time until it slowly dies, richen 1/8th turn from there and see if that is the sweet spot. 2,000 rpm should easily be do-able. If it speeds up while leaning the LS needle, keep reducing the throttle to the lowest rpm that it will run steady. If you have a flex rod on the carb it will allow the throttle setting to change while you are leaning the LS screw and it wil give you fits. Shaking almost always indicates a rich LS needle on a fourstroke, this is not limited to Saitos.

My 125 smoothened out at less than a gallon of 15% fuel, and is probably the easiest break-in I ever had. Idles steadily at 1800 rpm with a cline reg.

the 125 did take me a long time to get broke in, but it just kept getting better and better, after about 5 gallons(a big guess) it is the best idling (real smooooth at about 1700) saito or any engine i have Barry

and i did my adjustment just like Hobbsy states above except i had mine 200 rich. now i adjust all my low ends the same, saves me a lot of time

I have a Saito fa65 and the instructions call for a P-2 type glow plug. However, I am having problems finding P2 plugs. Is there a replacement for it?

Saito P2 plugs were discontinued quite a while ago, just get yourself an OS "F" plug, they're not cheap but '65's run well on them even with 0% nitro.

Larry, the OS-f, the Saito SS, a GloDevil 4C special or a Fox Miracle will all give you a great running engine, the GloDevil will give you an especially good, clean midrange. Few plugs have impressed me like they have.
