I almost got a Stearman. The Ultimate has a 1.20 that drinks the fuel!! I need to address that soon. I have tuned and tuned??????

FOT, my goal for my next big plane is a BTE Super Flyin King with a Saito 4.50 radial. I gotta get my 12 foot TeleMaster done for my Saito 2.20 first.

Freeonthree-

Yes, the 56 is a special engine for sure.

David,

I've seen the Flying King and it is a very nice kit. It will take a load of punishment. The guy could barely fly, took no advice from anyone, and the only thing that saved that model was the pulling power of his Saito 80 just when I always thought it was going to crash. He was good at beating it around, slamming it on the grass, etc. It flew for months with the Monokote tearing down the side of the fuselage until it looked like a flying skeleton.

jrcspecialties,
Is your Ultimate a Goldberg? I just picked up one at a swap meet with a 120S. I have to do some refurbishing before I fly it. It has a volicity stack on the carb. This should reduce fuel consumption. If yours doesn't have one, you may want to add one. If someone has disassembled your engine, your cam timing may be off causing high higher consumption.

It is a Goldberg. The engine has not been apart. I do need to add the velocity stack. Thanks.

Wellll, we've had snow, sleet and rain with high winds today. They are calling for 2-3" of snow tonight. SO to answer your question, NO!!! I'm down right cold. The way things are going here, it'll be June before we have any decent flying weather.

This Saito .91 belongs to Birman, I broke it in for him today, it's a sweet heart.
Saito .91s
Fuel=WildCat 10% Premium Extra/18%/80/20 blend, he's going to run 10% so that's what I used.
Prop=APC 14x6
Plug=Saito SS
Picture #1==4,000 rpm 10 minutes
Picture #2==5,000 rpm 10 minutes
=========5,500 rpm 10 minutes
=========6,000 rpm 10 minutes
Picture #3 tank nearly empty after 40 minutes total run time
Refilled tank, warm up, peak rpm, set LS needle
7,000 rpm for 10 additional minutes
Full song rpm after 55 minutes==9,725
I may play with it some more Monday to assure the LS needle is as good as I can get it with this amount of time. And then send it back to it's wintery home.
Larry, I'll count the turns out on the HS needle from gently closed + one half turn so you'll have a good starting point the first time you run it.

PS, that is my muffler, I did not violate the new one since mine is already prettied up.

Hobbsy, I'm a happy camper. Did you try it with the TH? Wondering what the RPM difference will be and what the sound difference is. I'll then know if I'll need a baffle. By all means, play with it some more Monday.
Whoopee!!

I put the TurboHeader on it toward the end of the 2nd 16oz tank, it looks like about a 75 rpm increase but I want to nail the LS needle and do the TurboHeader with more fuel in the tank. With the low position of the tank on the PSP, engines get a little ragged toward the end of the tank, not a good time to test something.

Saito's 180 is a good strong engine that gets pretty good fuel economy once broke in the problem i had was the spray bar assembly started leaking causing lean runs, this lead to bearing failure when I sent it in to horizon for repair under warranty (it was only two months old) they called wanting 63$ for the repair no explanation. it took me two days and many phone calls to get a manager who toll me that i was the problem and not them. I told him that I had not ever touch the spray bar only to hook on the fuel line.(no crashes) he did to horizon credit cover the cost of the repair. I own three os and one magnam with never any problems if i ever buy another high end glow engine it will be an os

byrdbrane,

It's unfortunate you had a problem with your Saito. They are excellent engines. Out of the thousands that are sold, there will be some that might have a problem. They are machines. I bet from the thousands of OS engines that are sold there are similar issues. The bottom line is whether you like the engine performance and want to use them. It sounds as though Horizon made it right!!

Happy Flying.

You must have talked to the same people I did ... They jerked me around good on my .72 plastic backplates... Go so upset I just ordered the parts and fixed it myself...
I now own a lot of Magnums... The irony of it all is it seems the lower priced engines give much better service..

i have several os engines incld. 91 fsII pumped and 120 fsIII pumped. i have had nothing but grief from those; clogged pumps and carbs, in for service twice since nov. and still not working right. if i can ever get them to run right again, they are great engines. my os 70fsII nonpumped i wouldn't trade for anything, reliable and smooth. you can have problems w/any brand. now i have saitos .72, .82 and 1.00 all broken in and ready to install, hopefully less grief and more flying.

In every bushel of oranges, there is a lemon!
Every manufacturer produces a not-so-perfect product. Hopefully, they will stand
behind it and "make it right!" That is the product to continue using!
I agree with your comments to byrdbrane!
On another note however I have a question.
I will be building a Goldberg Anniversary Edition J-3 Cub for which
I purchased an O.S. FS-7OII Surpass engine.
I have decided to use a SAITO as I have had such a great experience with them.
Which SAITO do you recommend from your experiences?
Thanks ahead of time,
krop

Any of the Saito's in the 62, 72, or 82 range should be fine

You can do as you please, but there are probably just as many people out there that had the same experience, but with the brands reversed.

I like all of the brands and buy all of them, so I'm not a "true believer" in any one brand that is trying to convince you to buy Saito, or OS, or Magnum, or Enya. I'm just saying that your knowledge base is a bit too small to be drawing such conclusions based upon one experience. Again, you can do as you please.
