Birman: Suggestion for the Saito 100
I built a Tiger 60 and took most of the dihedral out of the wing, put the servo`s back by the tail feathers, had to put the batterie way forward, ( still close on the balance, brass nose cone) put a Saito 100 on it and it was a sweet plane to fly, for sport or acrobatics, still on the order of the 4* and Venture .......John

Larry, the beauty of the 1.00 is that it will work in 1.20 sized planes as well as smaller ones.

If a engine comes defective from a factory it should be replaced, no matter what engine it is or who makes it! Bottom line!

ORIGINAL: RVM

I talked to Horizon yesterday about my .82. First, they found the piston was chipped just under the ring. I don't know how that happened, and I'm not sure I like the thought that a piece of aluminum was bouncing around the inside of my engine. Then again, it could have come from the factory like that and nothing at all was in my engine. So, I'm guessing they replaced the piston. Hopefully they replaced the ring as well. As far as the valve leak goes, the tech who was working on my engine told me that he polished up the valves and they were now sealing perfectly. The valve seats were fine and he did not do anything to them. I'd prefer the engine have been replaced, due to the chip in the piston, but the guy said he found no other damage in the engine at all.

It was all covered under warranty.

Hopefully when I get it back there won't be any problems.

One of my Saito 72's dropped a valve the first time it was run. It was sent back to horizon and they put the valve back together and sent it back to me. That was 5 years ago and nothing else has ever happened to it.

Yeah we've seen that engine before. It's not a bored out 2.20. It's a 2.20 converted to gas by Saito (2.20 cu. in. = 36cc). They've made other gassers in the past.

To the previ post I meant to add that it should be your choice if weather you would like to have the engine fixed or get a brand new one! It's how I would run things. In fact, some of the good manufactures have offered both options to me when I have had defective engines from the get go. Horizon hobbies policy is that they fix them, but if the part is on back order for >a month, they replace the engine for free. They will do better if you ask the right people though. I will do business with them again because they have always given me the beni of the doubt.

Hi everyone... I need some advice.
I have my first Saito... a FA82A on a Sig SSE... I maidened the plane today and all went well except I've found that the stock Sig mounts have cracked (no big surprize... kinda figured they wouldn't handle a big 4-stroke since they're designed for a 40-50 2 stroke ) Does anyone have any suggestions on a replacement motor mount? Recommendations on a soft mount? or... which Saito mount is the right one?
Also... does anyone make a better throttle arm for this engine to replace the flimsy plastic stock one?

I like the Great Planes mounts. They are long enough to accommodate the four strokes.

RE: FA-125a - Throttle Stop

Is the screw circled in yellow the “Throttle Stop - Adjustment screw†or just the “Throttle Barrel Assembly - Retention Screw�

On my Saito FA-125a , it’s pretty hard for the servo to completely close the carb. to kill the engine. At the field, it takes multiple tries with the kill switch, to get it to stop.

I have the radio’s throttle servo travel programmed as far as possible without it binding. Even when the throttle linkage is completely disconnected, and I press hard on the carb's black plastic throttle lever, I can’t close it completely.

If it is indeed a “Throttle Stop Adjustment Screw†I just need to verify that with someone who knows these engines well. If it’s not (and turns out to be a retention screw), and I back it off some, it will eventually vibrate looser, and the barrel will pop out in flight.

Also, if IT IS only a retention screw that must be left tight, does anyone know if the depth of the slot in the throttle barrel tapers-off at the end? If it does, I should be able to remove the screw and add another small washer. After tightening it back, the net effect will be that the barrel can travel just a bit farther … which would be perfect.

I will have to remove the engine from my Edge 540 to get at that screw, so I wanted to check with you guys first (before I went to all that trouble for nothing).

The circled one is the barrel retention screw, it has no throttle stop screw. You need to rotate the throttle arm a few degrees CW with the throttle arm screw loose. The angle at low speed is too shallow.

I have a FA 120 that has a carb that looks exactly like you pictured. It is not mounted on anything so I could look it over closely. It's barrel does not close entirely either and I believe it would continue to run with the amount of opening that remains. The "retainer" screw is installed completely snug against it's head. I backed it out and it allows the barrel to close fully. I believe like you suggested a small washer under the head of the screw would allow the amount of adjustment that you need to kill the engine.

Yes sir, the winds are shaking our house but the rain is light, the temp is about 40, I went for my daily 45 minute walk this AM and had to walk briskly to keep warm. I'm leaving for Missouri tomorrow AM for my annual fishing trip, I hope it's warmer there. Stockton Lake can be pretty chilly when the wind blows.

PS, I'll be breaking in my second Saito .62 when I get back, then I can finish the Dual Ace, I wish Bill could see it.

Enjoy your fishing trip. I wish I were going with you. I built a engine test bench and donated it to the club. Now I have a place to break in engines without annoying my neighbors. I'm going to try to break in and tune my 100 in the next couple of weeks.

Hi all, Fired up the Saito 45 this weekend, it was running real sweet. Flying with APC 12x5 richened to 9300.
Tonight I fired up the Saito 65. I bought it used and only put 2 flights on it before I destroyed that plane, so it's been ~ 2 yrs since it has run. I had a MA 14x4 K prop on it and it was singing. It was getting dark, so my tach wasn't working at high rpm. It was showing a super smooth idle at 2000 rpm with instant response. I hope it will run that nice on the plane as it will be inverted.

TURBO HEADER MUFFLER Saito 91 (no optional baffle), Saito 65 (with baffle), Saito 72 (with baffle)

Saito 91 APC 14-6 Omega 15% 52F 9400 with stock machined muffler (not cast) 9700 with Turbo Header Muffler

Saito 65 APC 13-6 Omega 15% 52F 9760 with stock machined muffler (not cast) 9950 with Turbo Header Muffler With/Baffle

Saito 72 APC 13-6 Omega 15% 52F 10460 with cast muffler 10700 with Turbo Muffler and baffle

Saito 80 APC 14-6 Omega 15% 52F 8900 with stock machined muffler (not cast) 8900 with Turbo Header and baffle. 9000 with Turbo header and no baffle. Don't know what the deal was with this engine? The results do not correlate with the 82 tests done previously.
The engine doesn't have much running time. Perhaps the engine would have been more responsive to the muffler when running a smaller prop like a 13 1/2 X 6 or a 13-7?

None of the engines sounded like a straight pipe with the Turbo Header. I thought the sound was nice. I do not have a db meter but the impression to me was that the Turbo Header was no louder than a stock muffler. I liked the sound.

I got some numbers on the 65 tonight.
14x4 MA K 10700, It might have a little more, but I thought that might have been too fast already.
13x5 MA K 10500, I'm thinking that is too high of rpm also.
It seemed like it idled nice and smooth down to 1800 rpm.
Should I try to prop this so it won't spin quite so fast? It will be going on a 3-D type of plane, so I don't want it too fast in the air.

Updated:

Horizon is replacing the .82 outright. I should have it early next week. The tech I spoke with took care of everything for me. He was a great guy who went out of his way to really help.

Hob, Ihave a new 91 nearly tuned in. Getting 8400 on a 14x8 APC; Due to cowl problems I am using the old style muffler from my 65. Do you think this is too restrictive for the 91?

Four strokes are not as sensitive to exhaust restriction as two strokes.

The small muffler doesn't do the engine any good but it will not hurt it either.

You will find performance down a couple hundred rpm
