RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
As long as the surfaces aren't warped it should be good. We have a few 2 strokes that we take the gaskets off the exhaust and sand the header smooth and never had a problem with them.

The 30% heli fuel has 22% synthetic oil in most cases.
The Saito 180 will run perfectly well with 15% nitro.
The deal with the 30% heli is that you get about 500 rpm over that from using 10% nitro. Some of the 3D guys want all the power they can get.
A 3D guy will unlikely hurt his Saito by running 30% heli. They normally only run full power for short intervals.
30% nitro only hurts your pocket. The four stroke seems to run just fine on it as long as you adjust the mixture a little richer to allow for the extra nitro.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I've read Saitos can take up to about 45% nitro before you start seeing any problems. I don't know how long your engine would last, but it would have some power while it did. Note that any damage incurred isn't from the extra power nitro gives, but rather the extra corrosion that that much nitro would potentially cause in the engine, especially the bearings. The internals can handle a lot of stress.

I buy 20/20, and mix it down to 15/15, and get 40 ounces of extra fuel, and the mix seems perfect for my style (puttin around) of flying. I fly every day, and the fuel cost is killing me !
I'd fly a gallon a day if I could afford it... lol My new little Pitts will have my 56 on it, so maybe that will be better for me, my 72 and my 80 really suck the fuel...

I use %15 cool power. Their website says do not use after run oil, that there is no need with their fuel. Anybody believe that and do most here use after run oil in their engines?

I don't, and never have... I don't believe that it actually gets into the bearings anyway... My 72 is 4 years old, and is only on it's 2nd set of bearings, and has so much compression, if I don't hold the plane while turning the prop, it picks the left wheel up, and it has a slight exhaust valve leak.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Holy crap.
I put 48oz. through my brand new .82a today (the one which replaced my problematic .82) during break-in. It was smooth, started on the first flip etc. On the 5th tank (12oz tanks) I ran it for a minute at a high idle to warm it up, then opened the throttle to full. I peaked it out and then richened it. It's outside idling like a Swiss watch.
Omega 25%
Around 75F right now; sea level.
Same APC 14x6 that I got 9550 peak on the last .82
Peak: 9850 RPM
I still haven't touched the low end, which should allow me a few more RPM once it is leaned a bit as well. I'm going to start working on the idle as soon as I finish this post.
This engine is significantly smoother, stronger and just better running than the .82 which it replaced. I knew I wasn't nuts and that my last .82 was not running right!

i ran coolpower with the first saito (100) and had nothing but bearing problems, but since switching to omega fuel (with a little castor) ive had no bearing problems.
Hi guys, finally got the big move to Round Mountain NV over almost and started on the new job so ill be around from time to time
good to be back..... im tired of moving[:'(]

More numbers on the new Saito .82.
About 56oz. of Omega 25% through it.
Idle is smooth at around 2200-2300. Amazing transition to full throttle.
Peak on an APC 14x6 around 9950. It went to about 10050 but would not stay there. I backed the mixture to around 9650-9700 RPM to fly with.
I'm going to go try a few other props to see how it is comparing.
All in all I am very happy now.

Have you had a chance to fly lately?
A small amount of castor is always good! I've been very happy with the Omega line. The 25% is inexpensive, relatively ($77 a case or so) anyway, and is a lot of power.
Welcome back!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Alright, last bit of numbers before I put the engine on a plane and fly it.
APC 15x4, peak, 9600. Same prop, last .82, peak was 9200-9400 on a really good day. Typically it would peak around 9100-9200. Idle on this prop is very smooth at 9225. Since it is still breaking in, idle is an extra bit rich and so is the high speed.
I can't wait for this engine to get 3 or 4 gallons through it.
I now see how seanychen got the numbers he did out of his.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I guess I need to try 25%. I've been running 15% Omega in my 82; starts easily with great idle at about 2300 and high revs average about 9000. I like to run rich to help ensure longevity, but would like a bit more oompf with the richness. Does this make sense?

Once your engine is broken in, and depending on how consistent your fuel flow is, you could get away with running your engine as little as 50-100 RPM rich from peak. If it is still fairly new, with less than 3 or 4 gallons through it, you may want to keep it around 200 - 300 RPM rich, if not a bit more. I generally shoot for 75 - 125 RPM rich once a Saito has 4 - 5 gallons through it.
The Omega 25% has been very good. When this case runs out I'm going to see about getting Cooper Fuels to mix me some 25% or 30% nitro, 12% synthetic/2%-3% castor fuel. I was using 20% nitro, 12% straight synthetic in a Saito .91 and it ran flawlessly. I do like a bit of castor though.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
i know that this question has probably been answered on this thread but there are almost 300 pages to go through so i'm going to ask.
i own two saito .82, one a gk. i just bought both of them within the last month. i was wondering all the specs. to tune my new engine to. i have a tach. i'm mainly wanting to know the idle rpms and max rpm that i should tune my engine. i'm burning wildcat 20% nitro. i live in western kentucky if that helps. i have read alot of tuning manuals about what to look for but i prefer to tune by a tach. i am swing a master airscrew 13x6 prop.

stallwart,
I have run CoolPower 15% on all my Saito's for years and have not had any problems. I always set my high side 200 rpm's rich for cooling and lube. If you need to improve performance, try different props. It is amazing the difference it can make from one to the other. The engine will only supply a certain amount of power. Don't forget to retune after changing props.

jmorgan2942- nice engines to have. You are now member #515.
Are your engines broken in? There is no magic number for these engines, each will run a little different than the next depending upon a lot of things. Look for a good, reliable idle. Don't try to get them too low, say 2000 RPM, if it won't hold that reliably all the time. 2300-2400 is a good place to start out if it will hold that. Peak your high speed and back off at least 300 RPM for starters and see how it flies.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
i have already broke both engines in and have flown both, i will never buy another 2-stroke. i own too many as it is. i have always tuned my two strokers with a tach and i know the ranges on my tach to tune them but i didn't know anything about the 4 stroke except what i have seen at the air field. i was just wanting to know some basic care techniques that different people have been doing to their engines to keep them running at their top
