RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
yeah i'll check the LS setting again. i thought i had to pretty dialed and turned that screw in quite bit from factory and just when throttle-up it would start to hesitate i'd back it (LS Needle) off a bit.
i'll check again!
thanks for the info guys. i'm pulling an air tractor 72", 3000ft elevation, 20% humidity, 15% CoolPower 4 stroke WITH castor!

I set the engine from the drive washer to the firewall just as the instructions said. I had to shim it out 1/2" in order to make it work. It is a J-3 GP and the engine
is a Saito 56. From memory (and that can be bad) I think it was 5 1/8 or 5 1/4 inches. I know it measured just what was called for. The cowl is pressed tightly onto the
nose, so I can't push it any further back.
I have decided to find or use a 1/4" pc. of laminated plywood with some 80 - 120 grit sandpaper glued to each side for holding power. I think the wt. of
the shim will be negligable.
Thanks for all responses. This is a great forum.

Moving your engine forward or aft even a little bit will make quite a difference in the CG. The weight of the shim itself won't make much difference, but the leverage of the engine being too far out or too far in will matter.
Double check the measurement from the firewall to the drive washer, just to be sure. It doesn't make sense that GP's instructions would be that far off.

HI all, I have a 125 saito. I have run over a gallon of fuel through it. Im getting aroung 8000+ rpms on the ground but cant seem to get full rpms wile flying in the air. I have leaned out the high and low speed needles with a rpm guage, but still have alot more smoke than my 82 saito that over 4 gallons through it. The problem is nothing happenings with the last 1/3 of the throttle. Im thinking its to rich, but not sure. What might i be doing wrong?

I also noticed that when flying I get almost all the power at 3/4 throttle. I don't seem to notice any improvement above that. I can hover my almost 8 lb plane at just 1/3 throttle, so its no big deal.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey guys I'm learning a lot reading this, thanks. Keep it up. I thought a little cool looking smoke trail was a good thing meaning it was not too lean. As long as it doesn't cut off on you. Or does that mean you are just not running as efficiently as you could. Been flying Saitos for a couple years now and loving them. Got a 72 on a Super Sportster, and on an Astro Hog and a 56 on a 81" cub that flies great even off water. Hope to have another Hog Bipe (lost mine) and an Ercoupe flying by next year on them. Oh, and how do you know when it's time to adjust the values? My Cub 56 is kicking pretty bad now and seems to have lost some compression, maybe not, but still runs great when I get it started. Guess I just need to check/adjust it. Oh, and one more question I think on the Saito site that regular after run oil was not good for Saitos has anyone heard that or had any experience with it. Some said use I think m. mystery oil or something. Thanks for any responses.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello everyone:
Seems like a good place to ask this. I am mounting my new Saito 72 in my WM Rambler 45. Plane has a cowl that covers the engine. If it was your plane would you mount the engine inverted or sideways? I have never mounted one inverted and only have 1 saito that I mounted sideways in my ultrastick. Should I cut a slot in the cowl for the muffler or a hole for the muffler pipe? If I only cut a hole then the muffler would have to be screwed in after the cowl was on and that doesnt seem right. What is the advantages of a inverted engine ? I guess it would have smaller holes in the cowl where the rockerarm valve covers come out.
Everything else is done on the plane and built perfect for a arf.
Please help.....thanks
Jay

vancouverman,
All but one of my Saitos are mounted inverted. The advantage of inverted from my experience is not having to cut the side of the cowl for the rocker covers. If you have plenty of clearance this is not an issue. As for the muffler, I try to bring the exhaust out the bottom where the cooling air exits. The primary objective is to keep things at the bottom of the cowl to be less visible. I like preserving the looks of the cowl as much as possible.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
If the fuel tank isn't too high, I would mount it inverted. I have a 65 that was inverted, ran super sweet. My 82 is fairly new and runs/idles/starts real good inverted. I didn't have quite as good luck with my 45 inverted. May having been too new or my lack of tuning ability way back then.
Personally, I would drill a hole for the exhaust if the lock nut is accessable.

Ok another question.
What is used to extend the high speed needle to outside the cowl so adjustments can be made? Where do I get one?
Thanks
Jay

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi, I'm having a problem mounting my exhaust for my SAITO 125GK. I've tried to use SAITO's flex pipe and two times it just cracked?? The second time on one tank of fuel? I would welcome any suggestions. thanks. I'm mounting the muffler under the middle of the belly and the engine inverted in SIG's new WACO.
