Ihave a Saito FA-82 with about three hour on it and it is blowing blackened fuel/oil from somewhere other than the breather or muffler. It is running great but making a huge mess
and starting to worry me. I have other Saitos and have never seen this before. Help!!!
Thanks
My 180 did the same, it was comeing from the cylinder and case connection, as far as I know there is not a gasket for that area just metal to metal. The blackened fuel and oil is most likely the metal from inside the engine due to break in and is normal. just check the cylinder bolts and make sure they are tight.

I had a similar situation only with a 2 stroke glow engine. I discovered that one of the allen screws holding the muffler had loosened enough to cause a break in the seal of the muffler to the cyclinder head. You may have some loose bolts on your engine that is not noticable but allowing this problem to develop.

Terry 5, Have you done Funtana 100x with a Saito 180? I am about to Build one and any tips on installing this beast would be appreciated! Thanks,Mike
I did my 180 on the funtana 90, I had to renforce the firewall with dowel rods and also had to grind down a bit of the motor mount so the carb would not rub. The plane had great power to spare.

Can anyone tell me the proper setting for the low speed needle valve on the Saito .72? Mine is out of whack and I'd like to start over again.

Also -- the high speed needle has gotten very sensitive and now peaks at less than one turn open (was 2+ when new). Any ideas on what is going on?

Thanks,

Bob

Bob, the needles effect each other, since the HS needle has a fixed seat and the LS needle is constanly changing position as you move the throttle the HS needle needs to be set first. Richen the LS needle to about even with the end of the throttle barrel if metal throttle arm, if plastic richen to about 1/16th inch inside the plastic arm. Peak the HS needle and leave it there for now. Begin leaning the LS needle 1/8th turn at a time checking the idle and transtion after every other change. Keep reducing the throttle setting as the idle increases from the improved mixture. At some point the engine will hesitate as you gently open the throttle, richen it 1/8th turn from there, richen HS needle to reduce peak rpm by about 200 to 300 rpm and re-test idle and transition, it should be spot on.

I recommend that you use loctite or similar adhesive on these bolts. Whenever I buy a new engine, I remove the bolts and use it to prevent the bolts from loosening. Be careful how much you use and where you put it. Also, use the blue color loctite because its seal is the the easiest to break if you need to remove the bolt.

Any ideas on the best blend of fuel to use in a Saito 91.
All opinions welcome.

Just run my Saito up for the first time and 'wow'!
What a sound.

I find that Power Master saito/ys 20/20 works well.

Nitro is probably expensive where you are, but 5% would help it run smoother. A synthetic/castor blend is probably best for heat and rust protection. I mostly use 15% with 17% synthetic/castor. I add several ounces of castor to that.

I use 10% nitro on all my 4st engines.
Been using synthetic oil only but have heard that 5% castor could be benificial.

Alot of people are using 15% nitro. Is that for top end power or to give a better idle?

10% is even better since you already use it. You should get a better idle and smoother transitions. You may see a hundred or so more RPM over fuel with no nitro.

I have found that putting the Nylon lock nuts on the bottom of the mounting beam helps a lot in keeping the motor mounting bolts tight. I tap the nylon motor mount for the size bolt I am using and then put a regular washer and nylon nut on the bottom of the mount. Never had one come loose yet, but I guess there is always a first time. If you are using one of the slotted metal motor mounts, then I put a washer, lock washer and then the nylon nut on. Neither one of these come loose, but then I only have about 4 hours on mine so far. I do check then once in awhile, but never found a loose one yet.

You will probably be happy with 10% nitro. Saitos run well on that. You may notice that yours will run smoother on 15%, but the cost is probably more than what it's worth. As you know, nitro is cheap over here. I happen to always run 15% because that is the most common percentage in this area. Maybe try a jug of 15% and see what you think.

Ok thanks for that BLW.
Will stick with the 10% for the time being.

The best way to think about that is that Saitos respond well to nitro but they don't in any way need it.

I understand that 30% heli is also good. I hear it gives more power and the additional oil give off a nice stream. I bought a gallon to try in my new Saito 1.00. I otherwise use Powermaster 20/20

I have the nylok nuts on the bottom just as you do, I just hadn't checked them since I installed the motor. I'll be keeping an eye on them from now on.
Thanks!

Ok Saito Guys, I need some help. I have a couple of Saito 82 engines and I just finished a H9 40 Size Twist with one of them on the front. I wanted this plane to help learn a little 3-D stuff but with the 13X7 APC prop I have been using before on my 82's it is just too fast. I was told to try a 4W APC prop but I am not sure of what size I need. I was wondering if anyone here was flying a Saito 82a with an APC wide prop and if so what diameter? WITHOUT TRYING TO VERIFY, the 15X4W would seem about right in my mind but untried advise has said 14X4W or either 16X4W and never mentioned the 15X4W. Which is why I was wondering................ WHAT DO YOU USE?

I've added another Saito to the hangar - this time it's a used 1.80.

Can't wait to fire it up!

This makes seven Saitos for me.....

and counting!!

I KNOW I won't ever catch up to some of the guys on this board, but I AM trying! [sm=lol.gif][sm=wink_smile.gif]
