RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Does anyone know where I can buy a saito .40a? I need one for an electric to glow conversion I'm doing. There isn't much room under the cowl. Length is the biggest problem. I was going to use a .45 MKII, but it's too long. I would also be interested in using one or both of my .45's as a trade. Horizon has the .40a on backorder, and I've heard they won't be selling them anymore. Can anyone hook me up?

Randy, I'll make a call here in a few minutes, but I don't think Bobby has a .40a, he might surprise us though. I have one if you need a measurement and a picture or two.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Thanks, Hobbsy. I'll take you up on the pics and measurements, too, when you get the time. The original firewall is only 3" behind where the front of the cowl is, so I'll need to make a new firewall further back in the fuse. The .45 cylinder head would end up hitting the original firewall because it would have to be so deep, so it would need to go in inverted. I'm hopeing the 40a will work sideways.
If you could get me a streight on side shot so I can see the intake depth, and maybe measurements from the prop washer to the back of the intake, and the back of the cyl. head. I'll be able to figure out where the firewall needs to be.
Thanks for going through the trouble.
Randy

I talked to iron bay about 6 months ago and he told me that there systems cant deliver enough fuel for the bigger engines.
unless they have a new model but it does'nt look like it.
Dont quote me and you cn ask them but it was something like up to a 90 2 stroke and a 120 4 srtoke.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I need some help,
I've get a Saito 125 to put in my Piper Arrow II cowling, the problem with the standard header, I have to cut a big part of my cowling, so what I'm looking for is a straight tube with 13x1 tread about 1" max, then I can put my muffler staight at the exhaust port.
Somebody can tell where I should find this little piece?
Thank you!

Randy, I ran the .40a a few minutes ago, the mount spacing,(crankcase width under mount tabs) is 1-3/16ths inch and the carb bolt to prop driver is 3-7/16ths. My camera battery is acting up so I gotta charge it up before I can take any more pics. I used Wildcat 15%/18% syn/castor lube, Fox Miracle plug and a bolly 10.5x6, the numbers are excellent. 10,500 was doable for a few seconds but not sustainable, engine is just past one hour run time. Could not try it with the TurboHeader, the exhaust is smaller than the Saito .50 etc. The idle will amaze you.

Vince, I have run mine on my Saito 2.20 without a problem, don't know why he said that.

Anyway The carb rebuild was a success! I had to wait for all the rtv to dry .But she cranked over the first flip.
Ill give ya'll a taste of 1.80 turbo header sweetness later ,first time I ran with it on the 1.80 and can't waite to get her up in the air!
Every Saito I own from now on will get one.

Note: you could put on taller LG & go to 13" prop.
If I wanted speed I'd just put that 72 on something slicker.

heres the trainer i have..Superstar 60 Maily i need to pitch down the 12X10 pitch boggs the engine at full throttle . So a 13X5 should do the trick but i'll have to find some longer landing gear.. So i can use a bigger diameter.
Any ideas on what landing gear would be longer. i have considered making it a tail tragger..

Link, a 12x7 or 12x8 would do nicely, the Graupner 12x7 has nice wide blades that will provide a sufficient load plus provide excellent braking on final. The 12x7 would put the .72 in the high nines as my .62 turns it at about 9,400.

I have a new 1.25 and ever since the first time I fueled it there has been a leak from the carb barrel. On the arm side of course. There is also about 1/16" of play in and out. Maybe more. Is this normal? I dont remember it on my 1.20.

Have you leaned the LS needle about 1.5 turns yet. It being very rich is most likely the cause and I suspect the sideways movement is no more than .0025 or .005 of an inch. In order for it to move 1/16th inch the guide pin would have to be non existent.

Ok So I love my 1.80 so much now with the Turbo Header I had to make a video with it.
This video wasnt exactly just thrown together, It took the better part of the evening to film ,edit and upload.
This is also my very, very positve feedback to Jim since I did not get a chance to get the 180 going until this evening, I got the muffler months ago.
More to come but with the plane airborn!
Enjoy! http://www.vimeo.com/1038668

I hope to have a new .40a by Friday. Thanks for the numbers, Hobbsy. How do you think that .40 will turn a 12x4 or 12x5? I'll probably break it in with a 12x4 since I have one here.

Hobbsy- I have turned in the LS but, 1.5 turns![X(]
It is rich on the bottom end but wow. I have turned it in about 1/4 turn and will see what happens. I am getting alot of smoke on the bottom and very little up high end. I keep richening the HS screw. I think I am at 3 turns out. Throttle is instantanous like any other too. I will keep leaning the LS. Hopefully the consumption will decrease too.
I am indeed getting .105" side play from the barrel. The guide pin is still installed in the carb body as well.
The performance is great, but I just wanted to make sure I wasnt missing an o-ring or washer. I am going to break out the breakdown illuistration in the manual.

Randy, I have a Graupner 12x5 and pretty sure I have a Bolly 11.5x5, I'll look. Congrats on finding the .40a. Bobby is also one of my motorcycle buds riding one of the new Kawasaki Concours 1400s with about a million hp.
OH, the best way to find the sweet spot dfor the LS needle is to peak the HS needle at absolute peak and leave it there temporarily. Then procede to lean the LS needle 1.8th turn at a time, checking the transition and top speed after every other change. While doing all this keep lowering the throttle barrel opening to the lowest idle you can get at each change. When you get just alittle too lean on the LS needle the engine will either hesitate or quit when opening the throttle, back it out about a 1/4 turn and then fine tune it as needed. Don't forget to richen the top rpm down about 250 rpm from peak when you're satisfied with the LS.
Link, let us know how it goes.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello all!
I have a Saito 1.20 that I bought about 10 years ago, was sitting in the box for about 9 years and ran it for the first time about 10 months ago. Since then it has had about 1 gallon with 10% nitro through it. Running pretty well with an APC 16x6. Borrowed a tacho (tower hobbies) from a friend but readings were fluctuating A LOT, so I don't really trust them...
1. Does anyone know what RPM I should expect on this with the APC 16x6 on 10% nitro? People are reporting around 9k with a 16x6 on the 1.25, from what I've seen.
2. How does this engine compare to the new 1.25? I know mine is heavier (960g, ~34oz, incl muffler), but I am not sure how it differs in terms of valve-sizes and other stuff..
Any help would be much appreciated!
Sincerely
Johan

OH
Read and heed Hobbsy's hints on Saito tuning. When you just start twisting needles with no rationale behind the twisting you will, in all likelihood, end up with an engine that is not running as well as possible.
Saitos are not difficult to tune, but they do not respond well to improper needle-turning.
Good luck with yours.

Randy, I think this will please you, I ran the .40a with the Graupner 12x5 and got excellent numbers. The idle pic. is poor but reads 1,874, it will idle there for quite a while but 2,000 is better.

That's great for a 40 4s. I think that may be the prop for the Beaver I'm building. Should be right in the meat of the power when it unloads in the air. I'm hopeing the Beaver comes in at 4.5 to 5 lbs. Eventually I want to fly it on floats. If I get the engine on Friday, I'll break it in and take some pics this weekend. Maybe I'll get some pics of my Super Stearman's maiden flight, too.
