I recently crashed my plane with a Saito 100. THe damage to the engine was minor,bend the intake tube and one of the pushrod tubes. I have sinced replaced the damage parts and adjusted the valves. Now to my question.( I have not started the motor since the wreck but I am going to try this weekend.) The motor seems to have a lot less compression than my other Saitos 100,could this be related to having to reseat the piston ring now that the engine was taken apart? I have adjusted the valves and rechecked them with no avail.I Am not being cocky but I know how to adjust the valves and have been doing it for years on all y Saitos. I am just puzzled why the comoression is low. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes the ring will have to re-seat itself. This will happen once you run it again.

The Standard YS header that will fit YS's from .91-1.70 will also fit the Saito 1.25. This only costs $18 and some change from Central Hobbies, but you will need to braze a pressure fitting on it, since the YS does not use muffler pressure. It is made of .030 Stainless steel. The 1.25 is the only Saito made that has the same exhaust threads as a YS. Then you can make your own exhaust, or even add a Teflon extension like I have with this YS. I also used real silver (Safety Silver 45% by Harris MFG.) to attach a brace, and a ring on the end to retain the extension. The Teflon is easy to work with but you have to be very carefull with it (Bad Fumes). You heat it with a torch untill it turns clear as glass, 800+ Degree's, and it swells about 30-40 %, you can quikly slide it over the end, and as it cools it will shrink down tight to the pipe. You can also bend it and do all kinds of stuff with it while it is in this pliable state. I use 3/8"ID 1/2" OD tube. I tried to destroy it with a Torch, and it is very hard to do. I ran 7 gallons through an extension built like this last year, and it is like new yet.

I have a new SAITO 72 GK. After a careful break-in of a gallon of fuel I still cannot get rpm above 8400 and the engine will not run steadily. At full throttle, the rpms fluctuate by more than 600. Does anybody have an idea of what could be wrong. Setup specs are,

Fuel - Byron 10 % nitro, 18% oil
Plug - OS F (tried two of them)
Prop - 13x8, 12x8
Valve clearances checked

I've tried many different mixture settings from lean to rich from 1 turn up to 2.5 turns.

D, you need to forget all about the turns and using your tach slowly, (starting rich) lean the HS needle until the engine slows a little frombeing lean. Change to needle setting one click at a time slowly, fourstrokes don't respond to needle changes instantly, give it time to stabilize at each change. Are you familiar with Apex Hobbies over in Tazewell, that's where I buy everything.

The 13x8 is a bit much I think for the .72, I no longer have a .72 to compare though. Sorry I can't help.

I ran my GK .72 in with a 12X8 prop. i have flow it with a 13 X8 A couple times and it flew ok with the 13X8 was pretty Slow.. have a 12X6 on it now and that seems to be pretty good so far still have yet to fly it with tthe 12X6 Since the winds are in the 40 to 60 mph range cant really fly anything.. Hopefully this weekend. I was wondering if anyone else notices Condensation on the intake tube on there saito's, mine seems to get condensation on the tube and gets really cold. Still runs fine though So its not a big deal just wondering if other engines do this..

The APC 13x6 is a very good prop for the .72, but it isn't the fastest one out there.

Barry, I played with the 1.25 some more today, I'm going to put it on an UltraStik 1.20 and play with it a lot.

Lets try this:

I have in my possession a vintage Saito G60FV gas ignition engine in NEW pristine condition that I am currently selling online but it is NOT listed here on RCU. I can't say where because of posting rules. Could anyone please tell me what kind of value this engine would be worth? I have contacted MECA and they tell me that they have no idea and "to check ebay to see what they are selling for"..... like this is a common, current engine. I also contacted a gentleman in the U.K. that has one pictured on his website but he states "This item is Not for sale". I know that it's a rare engine and there are virtually no results with an internet search to get an idea of value. Here on RCU there are 6 posts that reference this engine.

Generally the Saito 120 has slightly less power than a 125.

There were several different variations of the 120 for it has been manufactured for 20 years

Well, my new .40a just arrived here at work, and it's already been out of the box 3 times. It's a cute little jewel. Thank you, Hobbsy, for the connection. Bob even sent me an Apex hat. I will be running this in this weekend, and I'll post numbers when I get them. I have a MA 12x4 and 12x5 , a new MA GF 11x6 and 11x7 and an APC 11x5 (which will never see the nose of one of my planes) to try. I may also have a TF 10x6 wood prop.

Good deal, keep us posted on the break in and first flights. I am Saitoing today as well trying some more props on the 1.25, so far I have run the following props
Recapping the first four.
All runs on 15% WildCat Premium Extra and Enya #3 plug


APC 15x8=====8,250 rpm
MA 15x7 3 blade=8,100
MA Classic 16x6=9,325
Graupner 15X8==8,750, today I went larger to see if my hunch was right about the 1.25 being a torquer

Graupner 16x8==8,000 rpm
Mejzlik 16x8=8,200 rpm

Props l to r Graupner, APC 15x8, 15x8, MA Classic 16x6, Mejzlik 16x8, Graupner 16x8

Props sure are weird, the ones you think would turn the fastest, the APC, turn the slowest of the two blade props.

Did you notice any difference in operating temps? Loading it up at 8100 vs. 9300. My 1.20 ran allot hotter in the low 8's vs low 9's.

Jim, it ran the same no matter what prop, it was 67 here today though. I didn't look specifically for that but had it got hot I would have heard it rattle. It still baffles me why the APC rpm is so low. It gave the TurboHeader a good work out too. It runs the smoothest and has the best idle with the MasterAirscrew Classic 16x6, it really wakes up with that prop. The TurboHeader has a unique throb when using the MA 16x6 at 9,300. It makes ya smile.
