I let my 125 get lean in the air and start surging. How bad is that? It never died and I landed it.

I doubt if you hurt it. Just reset the needle valve and go on.

I'm with Jim. I doubt that you hurt it.

The ring will lose its tension before any major damage is done. The ring can easily be replaced, if the compression is down noticably (loss of tension due to excess heat). Just don't get the heebie-jeebies and let your imagination run wild and see symptoms that aren't there. It won't hurt to run it with a fried ring, as long as it isn't broken. Even then you'll get away with it the majority of times. Saitos are tough.

saito 125 exhaust troubles. what options are avail? flex pipe w/pressure tap? if so where can you purchase? seems stock set up is a little heavy and causing failures of the threads on the cylinder head, thats considerable weight hanging out there. i purchased a new head from saito but dont trust that w/stock pipe and muff it wont break again. someone HELP. thanks ricky.

The exhaust systems intended for the Y-S 110 will fit the Saito 125. Check with Central Hobbies

tower hobbies masterairscrew 15x4, nylon, 4 stroke. they also work well on 2 stroke engines. i use a 12x4 on my os 46ax, cheaper than the apc 12.25x3.75. i was going thru them like candy, needed to saves some $'s.

I'm looking for some info on how to change the bearings and then set the timing on my Saito 91. Is there a how to thread somewhere?

http://www.rc-bearings.com/

Across the top banner there is a section entitled "bearing install"

With the engine at top dead center the dot on the front of the cam goes straight down

The little ends of the push rods goes towards the rocker arms

Set the Valves .002" to .004"

"BLW" keeps up with the Saito member numbers

When you find out what it is, put it in your signature so you will always have it. To put it in your signature you will have to go to your personal file.

Waterlogged, I do have you as #588 on my list here at home. It will take a lot of work to type it all up and post it here, but I'll try and get to that one day.

I have a question for all of you longtime saito guru's. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly one's mood can change. i just got my Turboheader and 90 degree adaptor and I went to install it. Due to the angle of the exhaust on the 1.80, I couldn't put it on with the engine mounted. After remofing the engine, I realized that I couldn't thread the 90 and the pipe on separately because the pipe would hit the side of the engine after 1 or 2 turns, so I had to put the pipe and 90 together first, then thread the whole assembly in as one. To do this, I had to remove the intake to make room for it to spin. I put the pipe on and left it loose untill I could put it on the plane and get the final position, and re- teflon taped the intake to put it back on. I threaded it into the head until it seated, turned it not even 1/4 turn more, and heard a pop! I don't usually over tighten anything, but I guess I did this time. The head cracked at the intake boss. I don't really understand how it happened since I probably put 3 times the torque on the exhaust trying to keep it from moving, but I guess it's a different kind of fitting, and this one can't take the pressure.
My question... Does anyone see any solution other than buying a new cylinder for $110? If I do need to get a new jug, is there anything I need to know about puting it back together? I have had the jug and cam off of one of my smaller Saito's, but I never pulled the piston or the valves. Will the ring be ok? do I need to do anything special to seat the old ring in the new jug?
Here's a pretty good picture of the damage. It only cracked at this point, and I haven't even backed off on the nut yet. It may close up when I do.

Welcome to the hard luck club. Hobbsy did this to his 150 last year.

He installed a new jug. He swapped all the valve parts over.

The ring will be OK. You just lift off the jug and leave the piston/ring in place. Don't loose the wrist pin pads.

What you sometimes run into with swapping the valves is that you cannot get them out of the old head.

If you ran the engine with a lot of valve lash, the tops of the valves will get peened over. In turn, the valve retainers will not slide over the top of the valve and or the valve will not come out of the head nor go into the new head. There will be a little lip at top of the valve that you will need to remove.

The rocker arm stands are left and right. Do not get them crossed up.

Valve lash .002" to .004"

I keep this on my desk as a reminder to not be a ham fisted farmboy when using a wrench on a Saito 1.50. I was inspecting the ring which was fine. $114.00 wiser now.

Randy, if you need the new rocker mounts, I think I have two good ones, I am trying to remember if I used the new ones or the old ones, the old ones are hard to get off. If you happen to mess one up I have them, on the house.

Thanks, guys. I knew I could count on you. This engine only has maybe a gallon through it, and I keep the valves at .002-.0025, so hopefully I won't have any problems since there's probably little wear. I loosened the bolt after my post, and the crack closed up almost so you can't see it. It's only cracked 120-140 degrees from what I saw when it was opened, so I'm thinking of talking to someone who welds aluminum before I take the plunge. It may be repairable.?

Some of those Saito cylinders generally have a lot of porosity and that may be the reason for the failure.

This porosity may present a problem in the welding situation?

Your valves should slip right out.

If you are ordering anything for the valve mechanism, they come in two's except for the stands.

Mine is a 1991 high compression model with lots of hours and I left the same ring and bearings in it. I did put a new cam in it thinking the old one was worn, it turns out it has completely different profile on the exhaust which I mistook for wear.

Hey CB, it does a good job of flying without a prop, even when a 66 year young dude is flying it. Go for it. As you can see, it is surrounded by props.
