I love this site. I mounted the engine in my homemade stand and couldn't get to the nipple for the ATF oil. I did put a little down the tube's. MY next questions was to ask about the black oil all over and here I have the answer all ready. Thank you Hobbsy.

Well after 4 tanks she runs like a champ. Peaked her at 9200 on the last tank (16x6)and I'm very happy. She gave me a little trouble starting (needed more fuel in her) but after the first start she ran great. Thanks to all for the help and the idea of going with a Saito. I'm a lifer !!!!!!!

I'd like to thank the mod and hobbsy as well as all you people who take time to consider other peoples problems and try to help.It's often that one comment buried in a wealth of other good info that triggers a positive diagnosis for that person.This time it's me and thankyou all.

Hobbsy i read your figures and comments with interest.Went out to the shed and marked the hsn and began to wind it inwards.I was two and three quarter turns out from zero and the mod was right! i could'nt push past that sounds like it's going to die stage when the rpm dropped as you lean off the hsn.Rather than risk chickening out again i've set the main needle at two turns out and fired her up.A minutes warm up and then a gradual increase in rev's.Saw between 9800 and 10000 on the tacho and shut her down for now.The neighbours have had quite an earbashing this last week so will wait till the weekend and the forcast is fine so time to fly perhaps.

Old, I've had a love affair with internal combustion engines since I was 10 years old, now 66, I had 3 of those old iron engines with the two huge flywheels. They had names like Fairbanks Morse, Witte and Stover. Our neighbors had a huge one called Ball that had 9 foot flywheels and pumped compressed air into an oil well head. I still help my brother with his stock cars and I do this on 3 different motorcycle fora.

It sounds like you nailed you setting.

Mike it sounds like yours is good to go also.

I'm just starting to run in my new 180 on the test stand and everything is going well. I probably have a little over an hour on it now. But now I'm thinking I may be using to small a prop - or there is something wrong with my tach. On the last run the tach went to 10,400 so I shut it down. I can't believe that is a valid number this early in the game. So my question now is what prop are you guys with 180's using? This reading was with a 16X8 MAS. It;s my understanding 10,000 is Max RPM for this engine. All comments welcome.

The 16 X 8 is the standard prop for a 150

I have a MA Classic 18x6 on mine, and it turns 9000 rpm on the ground. The MA 16x8 is probably not quite enough prop for the 180, but another brand of 16x8 may work ok. I seem to remember getting about 9600-9800 out of an APC 16x8. Wood props alway seem to load the engine more, too.

SB, I am re-running my TurbHeader tests as I didn't keep track of them so I could find them when somebody had a question about them. So, here are some numbers using a Graupner 13.5x8, I like the Graupners for their wide blades and cool looks.

Prop====Graupner 13.5x8
Fuel====WildCat 15% 2/4 cycle fuel
Plug====GloDevil 4c Special

Rpm/Stock exhaust==9,700
RPM/TurboHeader===9,950
These numbers are both 50 rpm below peak running an IronBay regulator.

Even in the midrange it was obvious the engine was running stronger with the TH installed, you can just tell.

I'll do others as time will allow.

Thanks for the coments on the props for the 180. If the 16X8 is the standard prop for the 150 what is considered standrd for the 180? Also I have a 17X8 Zinger wood prop I could try. Maybe that'll load it up a little more. Anyway thanks for the response.

I don't have a 180 but a friend always used a 18-6

I use an 16x8 APC on mine and it does great. Peaks about 9500 and flies about 9200-9300.

I run an 18x6W but maybe the APC 18x6 would produce better numbers. I have to use 30% to get the W to hit 9000rpm. Otherwise its stuck down at around 8600 .

Thanks again to all!! I am going to bite the bullet and order a TNC tach. The one I have only displays 3 digits (x 10 for a reading) and half the time wont pick up anything unless it's almost touching the prop. All the reviews I could find didn't sell me much on the cheaper tachs so - - !! I'll let you know how it works out. It seems I was definately using to small a prop for the 180. I really appriciate (sp?) all the input.

I might have to change my name to young fart after seeing your numbers,i'm only 54 but got told a while back by some youngsters to "move over you silly old *******" while driving,funny as,made me think.I like the engine bed,cool as and did you machine the mounts? very spekky,plus you don't seem to have any near neighbours! Can you post a better pix of the throttle set-up?..any readers who have been to the wanaka airshow in NZ will tell you how many restored old steam tractors and stationary engines are there,makes your eyeballs ache and i've only seen the videos.Sounds good as you know and the aircraft line-up is awesome.

Sodbuster have you posted photo's of your aeroplane on a thread so i can see it? if not will you?

I just picked up a NIB open-rockered Saito 40 off eBay but it didn't include a manual. I do have a manual for a current-production Saito 40a but I understand that the two engines are worlds apart. Can someone tell me the prop range that will work on this engine? Also, can I use the 40a's break-in instructions or were the older Saitos broken in differently?

And might one of you have a manual for this engine that could be scanned or photocopied?

The test stand is made by PSP mfg and is mounted on a B&B Vibra Loc, a soft mount for large gasoline engines. The board is 3 1/2x6x30 inch oak boards laminated together with 2 hour epoxy then coated with the same diluted 50-50 with alcohol. The center board extends forward of the top and bottom far enough to mount the PSP. I have neighbors and is one reason I only did one engine yesterday, she works 3am til 11;00 am and then drives about 45 minutes home, watches TV for an hour or so then goes to bed.

As you can see I made it so I can flip it over and run engines inverted such as this Saito .80, I just flip the fuel tank over in its mount and voila.

Yes i looked at the board with interest.I'm making one almost the same here out of good old aussie jarrah hardwood.I had to laminate it because the router machine was coughing when i tried to cut it..[:-]

saito 220
i have just over 7 gallons on the 220 now.
even with the 16x14 it now idles at 1700 with no glow and it starts even its been sitting for an hour without a prime.
1 to 3 hand flips and its running. still when it fires the prop comes around so fast that it still takes a chunk out of the paint roller every time.
the only problem is it will not shut down remotely, the carb is set to close on the cut and it still keeps running. i tried to richen the bottom a little more but it still keeps ticking over.
ohh well i guess its better then it not wanting to idle at all

because I have heard that the 100 has the best throttle response out of the two.......

So which one......

There's nothing wrong with the throttle response of the 125 running a 17 X 4 APC
