O. that is a Goldberg Tiger 120 that had not been flown at the point, I flew it afew times with the Saito 1.25 than hacked the cowl cheeks off and it now wears a Saito 1.30 twin.

Beav, connecting to the rear mounted carbs on 4 strokes makes the up and down movemant caused by the arc to bend things a little, getting out a few inches relieves everything you get a more harmonious set up.

The other day I was buying a couple of props from Tower and ad came up about a MasterAirscrew 12.5x5.5 classic prop suitable for scale flights and better looks on Cubs. I bought one just for kicks and tried it out today on my Saito .56. It not quite enough prop for the .56 but would be perfect on the .50, OS .52 or Enya .53.

Fuel WIldCat 15% 2/4 with 18% all syn.
Muffler==TurboHeader
Max rpm===10,915 at absolute peak, rock steady running richened to 10,875, a little too fast for my taste.

Hobbsy,

Those are nice looking props. They have a good scale look with a Higley prop nut. I flew one on my 1.80 in the Gee Bee Y.

Thanks Jim, I was buying a 20x10 Classic for my SuperTigre 4500 Diesel when I saw that little ad, neither required any balancing which was a pleasant surprise.

A Saito 130 twin? Will it fit in my Little Toni? Are they still made or are they brand new? I only found a 182 td. Can you post a link to where I might find one please?

Mike it is the predecesor to the 1.82. Most like they just put .91 cylinders on the 1.30.

No sir, that is the tank set up a PSP test stand, it sits behind and below the engine and can be rotated to suit wder engines. I have the 1.30 on the adapter plate made for gas engines where the shaft sticks out the back or engines with radial mounts. If I have real odd engine I bolt on a set of H9 engine mount rails and bolt the engine to that. I'm purty good at figgerin how make things work that don't want to work.

fixed my engine! went to hobby shop to buy ball links, while there i checked the play on the saito's there in the throttle arm. they did not have much play! went home and checked mine and found that it had about 5mm play!

Took out the screw that holds in barrel, and sure enough, the barrel was fine but the screw was worn away completly! the smooth machined part of the screw was just about fully gone!

I decieded to make my own screw instead of buy the whole kit which was going to take about 4 weeks to come in.

worked very well! engine now runs perfect at any throttle setting!

I dont know how the screw got worn so quickly (only about 6 litres through it) and why the barrel did not get worn also, i have never taken that screw out before!

any hoo, it's all good, just got to see how long the screw will last now. have the feeling that the standard one is hardend.

The ball links also helped to limit slop in the arm.

So if any one has a surging idle this is another thing to watch for!

I am still having a bear of a time getting my old model 90t to run reliably. I can't seem to find the spot where one cylinder won't keep going out.

Question to the Saito guru's out there. Is it possible to replace the twin needle/throat carb with the single needle carb?

I understand it will probably take new manifolds and such to do the swap, and it would be a bit pricey, but if it will let me actually enjoy the engine it will be money well spent.

I saw on horizon's site that the various parts are available, just wondering if the swap is as easy as just swapping out the manifolds and carb.

The new model 90t is an even fire engine where as my older 90t is an odd fire twin, Would that cause any tuning difficulty with the single carb?

The plane is ready to go except for this tuning issue.

PS, I just added a new saito to the family, a little 40a, going in a cute little tiger moth. Should be a great model to fly.

Rod, the reason for the two carbs is because on that uneven firing set up when the first cylinder is near the end of its intake stroke the second cylinders intake valve begins to open. The fuel and air are headed in the wrong direction when the 2nd cylinder begins to intake so it gets cheated, this same phenomenon is what gives Harleys their characteristic lumpy idle. w8ye has the 1.00 version of your engine and knows much more than I. I have the 1.30 and once it was run in the dying cylinder trait just went away.

What kind of idle are you getting. I have a heck of a time getting it below 3000 without one cylinder going out. I am already planning to put on a onboard glow system, but I would like to get the engine somewhat right before that. Don't want to use the onboard glow to fix bad tuning. And if I can get the tunning issue fixed, I might not even need the onboard glow driver.

Thanks for the info. I wouldn't mind the lumpy idle if I could get the engine to idle that slow in the first place. I am also going to try some different muffler and pipe options to see if maybe it is a fuel draw issue. The engine came with the shorty pipes and kinda wondering if maybe there isn't enough preassure going to the tank.

Will try and get a couple pics to show the engine and plane this weekend.

I have the 182 Saito twin which is a later version of the 130 twin. I removed the original McCoy MC4 plugs and installed OS "F" plugs. (All 4 of them) The 182 has dual plugs in each cylinder.

After adjusting the HS needle valves the engine idled fine around 2200. Tuning was a none event. Valves were set as close to .002" as I could get them.

Thanks, will try new plugs, not really sure what is in the engine now.

What gets me is how the air bleeds are arranged on the carb. One side is on the front and the other is on the back of the carb. Seems like that would make the adjustments different for each side with the different pressures from a running engine.

Will work on it more this weekend.

Hobbsy i'm reading that people like the single carb version of that engine.

The harleys i see over here have a single side mounted carby you could almost stand up and walk thru,with polished s and s intake ram that looks like an upside down tapered one gallon bucket and two huge slugs slowly going up and down on an oddly spaced crank arrangement re smoothness,what's your thoughts?

Could i have your needle settings for the 82 to make sure i'm in the park? 10% nitro 14x6 apc prop.

The single carbs engines are double throw crankshafts and are even firing where as the dual carb ones are odd firing and have a single throw crank. That may not true in the case of the 3.00, it may be even fire and yet has two carbs.
As to the Harley you saw, it was equipped with an after market option called a Heavy Breather, they make it in a two carb version too, very expensive. The Harley you see in my avitar has Multi Port Sequential Fuel Injection, when Harley was testing the FI they let people try it out and the hard line Harley Dudes did not like it because the engine didn't shake at idle so mine and all of the new ones have the Fuel Injection programmed to make the engine shake at idle. My engine bobs up and down just like the carb models at idle but the instant you start to move the shake is gone and I can put my knee against the air cleaner at 75 and feel nothing.

Rod the reason one carb has the airbleed hole in front and one in the rear is so they don't have to manufacture two mirror twin versions, its no big deal just cosmetics. Set both air bleed screws just slightly closed of halfway across the hole and you'll be really close to the optimum setting.

Hello to all the people who take time and contribute to this thread mods included,thank you again.Hobbsy too,he's a beauty as they say over here,hairy knuckles and all

The 82 has had a gallon thru it now and idles reliably at 1800 but will go down to 1600 for ages,maybe less nitro is good.Pinched the fuel supply off on my dinosaur engine hobbyhorse setup and a 200rpm increase before the engine cutout.At 2000 rpm the handbrake says it sounds like a contented cat curled up at night on your pillow and snoring in her ear..that was me..

Yep , these gys do a great job of helping out and having some fun at the same time ! I took my Super Tigre 90 off of my Tiger 60 and replaced it with a Saito 100 , looks and sounds great !! Now she needs a little nose weight , I think the plane was actually designed for a small block V8 in mind , everyone I talk to said they come out tail heavy.

I had the same experience with my Toger 60. I put a Saito .65 on it and thought the plane was tail heavy. I put aome weight in the nose and then found out it made no difference. It flew great without the extra nose weight.

This plane needs little power to take it up , the only reason it got the 100 was for the weight. With the ST G90 it would lift off at less than half throttle. I don't think I ever bother with full throttle unless I was going straight up or tunning.

Nice plane aj and thinking along similar lines for a bigger saito but might go the older looking cap 232 version.Could you or others tell me what you can get out of your engines re low speed idle? just got the 82a down to 1000 for five seconds and it will happily sit at 13/14 hundred.Don't mean to turn this into a stationary engine thread but i'm interested in the experiences you have had re tuning.

ps my 82 with 14x6 apc is pulling 89/9000 wide open and main needle just under 1.5 turns out.Was going to wind the low speed needle in and out so i could say what that was too but i don't want to touch it now.Looks like about 1mm in from flush.

Thanks, its not perfect but I'm happy!

I have not got the idle right where I want it yet , having linkage troubles. As soon as I get that reworked I'll let you know. My 72 is idling around 2100 with an APC 14x4W prop. My 82 has not been tacked for low end but it was turning 10,300 with a MA 13x6 K series , I think I'm going to go up a pitch or two. I was at one time looking at a few Hangar-9 planes but between the price increases and them discontinuing things , I don't have much to worry about.
