Mike, here is my Saito 90 triple on my unfinished BTE Flyin King. The Keleo exhaust has a very realistic sound.

Phil, I saw that but was hesitant to bring it here for fear Don might not want that much recognition. Its an excellent idea and reasonable price though.

G'day Hobbsy I have the same Keleo exhaust ring on my 90R3. As the fitting instructions said, it is not the easiest exhaust to fit but with some patience and time I managed it. It really makes the engine sound even more amazing. Very realistic indeed. I have my Sopwith ready to go. I am just waiting for the "right" day for its first outing. I did the running in on a test stand and have not run it in the plane yet but we are getting very close.

The Keleo ring exhaust is an excellent product and the service from the Keleo web site and the speedy delivery to Australia were also excellent. If all online sellers offered such a good standard of service, I would be a very happy chappy indeed.

The metal back cover for the 72/82 is a great idea. I had the exact same problem with my 72 and only figured out what was happening with the help of the great guys right here at Club Saito. It was dirving me nuts.

I checked Horizon and they new have a new improved back cover with additional ribbing and reinforcement (material change too?) to prevent warping. I think it was about $13 and seems to solve the problem for now. Jury is out for long term performance.

Ken, I have your carb pretty well dialed in, it seems one of your enthusiastic well meaning helpers backed the LS needle out about 4.5 turns from ideal, I hope you don't mind my sharing that here. I had two Saito .72s over the years, I planted one in a concrete road at Fort Belvior and traded the other to Dar Zeelon for an MVVS .49 Diesel. Now having a .62 and .82 I don't think I need a .72 anymore.

Here are the numbers for the flex pipe vs. stock new style cast muffler on a Saito .62. I decided the difference would show up better on a larger engine.
Engine==Saito .62 plain
Fuel== 15% WildCat 2/4 with 18% all synthetic.
Plug==Fox Miracle Plug
Prop==Bolly 12.5x6
Sock muffler==10,350 rpm
Flex pipe====10,225 rpm

No problem - the 'helping hands' are something newbies should be aware of!

I really apprciate your help more than I can say. You and all the Club Saito experts are Saviors new new glow guys like me.
This is a lesson well learned and next time I will make sure to check and keep adjusting the needles until I get it running good.
Guess I just need to learn how to diagnose these types of performance issues.

Per my email, please explain the lightweight prop issue vs. the one you used. Don't want to make that mistake again!!

A heavier prop makes setting the idle mixture easier because of its greater flywheel action and smoother operation. I avoid wood props on fourstrokes because I've had a couple of them shatter on a kick back. I apologise if I already sent this pic. ina PM, but here's where the LS needle now sits.

No sir I haven't, but I'm not the one who claimed they reduce rpm and power. My referrence to the power increase when using a TurboHeader was in comparison to the stock exhausts whether cast or older long ones. As you can see I'm all set up to do it. The engine is my older Saito .56 from around 1995 which spent most of its adult life hauling a H9 Cherokee 40 around the sky. I always referred to the Cherokee as a flying brick because it was heavy for its size. The prop on the .56 was always a MA 3 blade 12x6 which it turned at 8,800.

OF, whenever I make any change I richen the HS needle by 1/2 turn before restarting the engine, since the Flex Pipe has no pressure tap it was lean on the startup. The HS needle had to run 3/4 turn richer with the Flex Pipe, that's where it peaked, no amount of coaxing would make it turn faster than 10,225 with the Flex Pipe. Also as I already knew from running the flex pipes on my TS .90 twin, it had an awful, irritating sound.

Thanks for the tip and i'll start with that,going richer i can get my two strokes to bark bacfire with blue flames out the exhaust and all that other silly stuff but i'm hurting my saito's by running them to lean,i don't know why i keep doing that.Thanks for the info and cheers

OF, nothing rivals the sound of a strong fourstroke at full song on the peak, its awful tempting to leave it like that, that's one reason I sing the praises of the IronBay and Cline regulators, you only need richen them down from peak about 100 rpm. I have pulled many backplates from engines after a run, being careful to not get engine nose down and disturb the oil that is left in there. There is always a more than adequate supply even when using 16% lube. So, logic says that when running 100 rpm lean of peak that same amopunt will accumulate in the crankcase, it will just move through the engine at a slower rate.

In the picture there is about that much more oil forward of the crank in the bottom of the rear main bearing.

Ken, I'll ship your engine back Monday, today I ran 16oz of WildCat 15% with 18% all synthetic lube. Corrosion Xed the lower end.

APC 12x8 rpm === 10,120
MA K 13x6 rpm===10,000

That is quite different than the results I have seen with flex pipes. I lost more RPM's than you did with the flex pipe. Perhaps that is because I am using them with larger engines, or because I am using a different flex pipe than the one you used? I really don't know.

I used the 12mm pipe with the pressure fitting on my 82 and 100. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...D=SAI182TD1112

I didn't record the RPM numbers at the time, but I can assure you that my flex pipes lowered performance. It was significant enough that I promised myself I wouldn't buy another one!

Lately, I have been using more of the stock Saito cast mufflers and Turbo Headers. I have been very happy with them!

Ken, I thought I had a 12mm flexpipe here that came with my Saito 1.30 twin, If the 12mm setup uses the same diameter flex pipe as the 10mm, that could be a problem. I'll measure the 1mm pipe tomorrw. The one pictured above somewhere. The 10mm TurboHeaders actually out perform the 10mm straight pipes, I was surprised by that. In your test, I think you were running a larger engine than my .62.

I didn't use any 10mm pipes. Both the 82 and the 100 Saitos use 12mm threads.

Ken, what I was getting at was if the 12mm pipe you used had the 12mm nut but the same diameter pipe as mine which has the 10mm nut it would be more restrictive to the larger engine.

I'm about to go out to the shed and measure the pipes for my 62 and 82(id) i have a really good old tap and die set and i'm tempted to buy a good quality small pipe bender,Anybody been there and done that? cheers
