Where is a good place to order bearings from? I want to replace the ones in my 180 and 150. Is it worth the extra money for ceramic? I noticed there are several different types to choose from. What do you guys use??

My Saito .91 is set up in the same manner: Harry Higley prop-lock, Dave Brown adapter and spinner. No troubles.
If the centering ridge cause problems, perhaps one could file it off. If the threaded hole in the adapter-nut is bored and threaded true, the centering ridge may be redundant in this application. The face of the prop-lock has no inlet for the ridge at any rate. It has not caused problems for me, but I can understand that it would cause concern.
As an aside; with this set-up, once properly tuned, my Saitos never throw props anymore. At one time I tried a plastic spinner with a metal back-plate as a substitute for the Dave Brown. This was on a Saito .82...I wanted a particular color, hence the plastic. For some reason the back-plate on that spinner would not grip the serrations on the face of the prop-driver adequately. It could never be kept tight. The plastic spinner was no problem (probably luck), but once replaced with a Dave Brown, the problem vanished.

Junkster, If you skim back through this nearly 13,000 post thread you'll find that nearly every bearing failure was when using that fuel.

Its funny you say that because my 100 that has 4 gallons through it has bad bearings! What fuel do you recommend? Are ceramic bearings worth it and do they really give higher rpm's? What bearings should i use and what size are they? Thanks

Everyone I ever saw using the Green Stuff had bad bearings sooner or later unless they threw a little castor oil in the jug

I've been using WildCat for 15 years and used 6 gallons of PowerMaster in the midst somewhere, I recommend either. I haven't experienced the a bearing failure yet on any engine.

I like the ones with the aluminum backplates and never had problems with them on engines up to the 1.25. I would have to go look, but I think they are Great Planes spinners.

It could be that you are hung up on how many turns the needles are, and not listening to what the engine is trying to tell you. My advice would be to totally forget how many turns and just tune the engine to where it should be.

Did you replace your vent line to see if that cured your problem?

If you care about that engine, put some castor in it.

Hi I have a line on a saito 91, the guys says its never seen fuel (never run). It is a great deal and they did state a small amount of oxcidation on one of the engines bolts, when the pictures were emailed to me there looks to be some rust not only on one of the the bolts but also the prob shaft (threads). Would this be a concern that there maybe problems on the inside even though they are saying its new, I have never seen rust on any of my engines. Just wondering if you would stay away or not be all that concerned in your own opinion.

how much are they wanting for it?
I just bought a never-started .91 with a bit of rust on the prop shaft threads and a little oxidation on the case at the mounting holes, for 100 bucks. I was the only one at my club that even called the guy about it.
I am happy as can-be with it.

you can also get castor oil at the drug store or discount store but it's cheaper to get it from a model airplane source

I bought a quart of the Sig stuff from my LHS and it lasted 7-8 years... I would put 1/3 cup into a gallon of all-synthetic fuel. Maybe W8YE's idea of buying it at the drug store isn't a bad idea.

If you buy it from the drug store make sure it is pure and just plain castor oil. Don't use the flavored kind,

I add Sig castor to Omega 15%.

W8YE and I opened up a Saito .80 that had suffered a bearing failure. We listened to it howl while the owner was flying it. When he landed, the engine was hard to turn over by hand. The fuel had drug store castor added, and there wasn't any rust anywhere in the engine. Just a case of bearings letting go. Otherwise, the insides were spotless.

BLW repaired that engine. I just watched. That was a year and a half ago. The engine still runs good.
