RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Just would like the fellow members to know that Paul at rc-bearings gave me a call today and offered me a new bearing to replace the leaking front on my 100. He was very profesional and said that he hopes the bearing just had a bad seal. Great Service!!!!!
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Yes but you may have backed it out to far.More nitro in your fuel just means more air, that's what nitro generates hence opening up the needles.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey guys,
Could someone tell me if their is a tool or what is the best way to
re-tap the threads for the glow plug on a SAITO .50? I got a great deal
on it and its a few years old but not ran to much, im not sure how bad
they are but i cant get the plug to start. It did not have one in it when
i got it . I did not want to mess it up by trying to run the plug in it by force.
I think its just the first threads. The preveous owner didnt remember
anything wrong with them when he had it.
Thanks,
Ty

W8ye,
I figured someone did but have never had to use one.
Thanks so much for the help, as always . This is why
Club SAITO is my favorite forum! Everyone is more
than happy to help, me included.

If the threads are too far gone, this guy can put a Heli Coil in your head if you pull just the cylinder and send it to him. I think it is a lot cheaper ($20) than a new cylinder

W8ye,
Thanks again for the help, i'm gonna pick up a tap and try that as i dont think it is to bad.
If i cant get it that does sound like the best ave. The heli is a permanent fix?
Thanks,
Ty

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Gentlemen, a couple of questions.
I think I've about got my new .56 mostly broken in. I am getting about 2500 idle and 9300-9500 top end with an 11x8 prop.
Transition from idle to full power is smooth and faultless.
Does this sound about right for a motor with about 75-90 minutes of break in run time?
Also, it will idle about two minutes at my current settings, does this sound about right? How long can a well run-in engine idle?
These 4 cycle Saitos are fantastic motors!
Thanks for any comments.

Until it runs out of fuel or the glow plug dies.
How long can a well run-in engine idle?
Thanks

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
All of my engines idle very reliably for extended periods of time, while I have never actually tried to idle a full tank of fuel I am confident that any of my four strokes would eventually do it.
I only have one Saito (the 125) and it was very tolerant of the LSN being set factory rich, no other four stoke that I have operated would have been able to idle below 3 or 4k (is 3 oe 4k really an idle??) with the LSN set as rich as the Satio factory setting...
If your engine is conking out after two minutes or will not transition chances are the low speed needle still needs some tweaking.
Your engine is a 56, with run time of 90 minutes or less, just out of curosity how much fuel does that equal ?
This has nothing to do with your Saito but my Magnum 61 four stroke would not idle at all until I had run a gallon of fuel through it, now it will just sit there and seemingly idle forever.

I have a friend who likes the old time gas free flight planes like the Dallaire and others. He has four strokes on all of them.
A ASP 65, OS 40, Saito 40S and they will all idle a whole tank of fuel.
he will take off and climb up as high as he can see to control the plane and then let the engine idle while he glides the plane around. He stays up until the engine runs out of fuel and then he lands dead stick.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
c.,
Saitos come new with the LS needle set wildly rich and will run pretty well with it way too rich. This is just a personal opinion based on (limited) personal experience and observation, but I think people have difficulty with their Saitos because they LS needle is never properly set. People seem to be reluctant to lean it to the point that the engine is running at its optimum. I think it i the reason that Saitos have a reputation for being unreliable (in some quarters), fuel hogs, and for being messy-running engines. It is not difficult to adjust the LS, once the HS is set, but it usually ends up needing to be turned in a lot more than folks are comfortable doing.
Also, as far as idling through an entire tank, even a well-run-in engine that has not been properly tuned will probably not do it.

It would take some patience to run a flight size tank of fuel thru at idle speeds.I have a 82a that will idle down to 1000rpm briefly and 1300rpm reliably with no onboard glo when it is upright on the test bench.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello all! If anyone would have a good answer for this it would be here.
I've recently acquired a supposedly low run time Saito 90R3 radial. The engine looks great, seems to have decent compression and looking in the exhaust ports the chamber and valve stems look factory fresh, piston tops are bright and shiny-looking in glow plug hole. I have not disassembled except for removing valve covers. Valve lash has been checked and set all around, and I am using new hangar 9 super plugs. Fuel is cool power 15% nitro castor/synth. I have used this same fuel in all of my other saito single and twin cyl engines for years and they all run like scalded cheetahs.
Problem is this: one cylinder consistently flames out at low-mid rpm. Swapping plugs around makes no difference, high rpm peaks around 82-8300 with a 13x6 prop, HSN set at 78-7900. I have worked with the low speed needle adjustment to where it runs with glow heat at about 3000. When the plugs are de-energized it will throttle up to full speed but when you bring it back down to a high idle the same cylinder either dies then, or while throttling back up again. 4 out of 5 starting attempts result in 2 cyls running and the one never lights; it just spews raw fuel. On 1 in 5 starting attempts all 3 will light initially. Run it up to 6000, remove glow power, let it run to get warmed up, back it off a bit...same cylinder dies.
This is getting very frustrating being that it's really hard to adjust the LSN when you can't even keep the motor running reliably with or without glow heat. 3 hours of monkeying with maybe 20 to 30 minutes of running.
Thank you, Lee.

The hanger 9 Super plug you use has to look like this one

This is a better plug to use

Should we start a different thread on what happens to your needle setting perfectly running saito when you turn it upside down, relativly speaking, specially for you radial guys.Love that sound too. What drips down overnight into your favourite glo plug and hinders it's start up or performance?? would like to hear your heartfelt comments and frustrations eg:will this ever idle properly again??
