I was just reading the spec's on the saito 82 and the 56..Looks like the 56 is 2oz lighter..What does that do the wing loading on the .40 size cub? I have a new one in the box and am getting ready to order another new saito..

2 ounces doesn't affect it much one way or the other with that big flat bottomed wing.
However the larger engines get to be a real pain taking off. My father-in-law had his Great Planes 40 size Cub wrecked twice on take off by supposedly experienced pilots when we were first learning to fly. I flew it successfully many times by slowly advancing the throttle and letting it gain speed on the ground waiting after the tail came up before applying elevator. With a big engine if you attempt to horse it off the ground the tail will lift before you've developed flying speed and you'll do a wing overdown the runway.
I've seen other members fly with a 52 four stroke and not have that problem. Overpowering Cubs can bite you.

Many planes will lift off before they have actual safe flying speed and they just peel off to the left and crash. Let them stay on the ground until you have flying speed

Been flying eight years now. You are preaching to the choir. The cub with it's narrow landing gear and big rudder seems to exaggerate these tendencies with a larger engine.

I just broke a 72 down and re-assembled it after breaking a rocker arm. If I can do it, anybody can! [&:]
I got a lot of help on this thread both from searches and answers to questions.

Got the engine back together and it's running just fine. It took a while to find the right setting for the low speed needle, but a couple of days ago I hit on it. Nice transition and it also idled for several minutes at a time ticking over sweet as can be at about 1900 RPM.
It's a good feeling to get one running sweet after doing some work on the innards.

OK guys....I have the saito 220aac...It has always sounded a little loud to me...I have like 3-4 gals of byrons 20/20 through it and now one of the skilled guys at the field tells me the bearing are bad....Its in a hangar 9 mustang 1.50 new build......What are they best bearing to use in it

No it is'nt and i often wonder whether the people who argue for this have a tape measure and use it,full scale tail draggers.Ive listened at the bar while 10,000 hour tail wheel pilots of piper cubs argue tyre pessure pounds down to the last inch,they were always just that(cubs)and babies to handle on the ground too.Austers are harder to spot land and fly a maule if you want to have a busy time pre take off with lots of hp.I don't see a reason to pass on old wives tales which may make a new pilot that much more apprehensive.WW2 pilots used to kid the newbies that the hurricane was the most difficult aeroplane that they had ever flown to date when it was i9ntroduced into service,it was an ego trip and a leg pull for the experienced pilots but killed a few more than necessary.

Jim, I have run that WIldCat Premium Extra for most of 18 years. I run the Premium in my RCVs, good stuff.
I ran the ProMix in my YSs it worked well in them when they worked well.

Am remotely mounting one of Jims/RC Specialties and secured it to the firewall using tiewraps that have a hold down screw hole.
The package says they're rated to 185 degrees.Think they'll melt?
I know they get hot enough to melt Dubro exhaust deflectors.....
Would be awfully upset to lose my third muffler off this plane to something as stupid as these tiewraps melting.

I would recommend an adel clamp with a hard wood block as a stand off. You can get adel clamps at the local automotive parts store but they usually have a large bolt hole. Go to a local airport and find an FBO (fixed base operator) they are the ones that sell the fuel. The aviation adels have a smaller hole. Take the muffler with you for sizing. Make sure it is anchored to the firewall well. This should solve your problem.

Hi all, My trusty .65 died tonight. While on a verticle upline the engine quit, thought I went too lean on the main needle. It would barely turn over when I got it on the bench. Pulled it apart tonight and found lots of metal flake in the oil. The piston is cracked, ring bent because of the crack. The piston pin is broken and the pin bushing fell out of the rod. The piston end of the rod is oversized as well. Any idea what may have caused this? I have a few gallons through it, but I bought it uses so I'm sure it has many gallons through it. I like the MA13x6 Classic for this one.

I have rebuilt two and one is toredown now. I havnt had quite the
same pars break but what i have learnd is when the bearings get
wore things start happening,most of the time it seems that is where
it starts. The parts are not that high and well worth the repair in my
opinion. Hope you get it going again.[8

Question?
Is there an air seal inside the high speed needle assembly of the Saito .72? Is it replaceable? My engine, with about 100 hours of operation, now peaks at 1 turn out from fully closed. The needle is very sensitive. Any help will be appreciated.
