my planes perform just as well on 3 blades as 2 blades.

everyone told me, "use 3 blades for display, only" "fly with 2 blades"

poppycock is what I now say.

well i am having a heck of a time with my Saito 150.... i just couldn't get it run well at WOT or even mid. it would never quit, idles beauty but just doesn't have the power. i've changed props, mixture settings, now i just changed over to Large fuel lines to see if that will help. i used to think it was getting too hot but i flew it this spring on a pretty cold day and right away it was doing the same sort of thing. have put on a slimine muffler too.

i will go back to the 3 blade when i can get things to work better than they are

so any other suggestions out there that i could try.? oh, just did the adjustment on the valves too, they were out A LOT!

yup, i have a few other things to try so hopefully i'll narrow it down a bit. managed to find a valve cover screw/bolt. raided my cycling parts and found just the perfect size, length too. total fluke really.

Question for the club Saito folks;

I bought a Saito FA72 for the Kadet Senior my stepson and I are building. I'm having some problems getting a spinner that will fit. Anyone here found a spinner that has worked well on the motor[8D]?

As you can see from the pictures, the plastic around the nuts in the backplate of the spinner won't let the backplate sit flush against the "drive flange." I think thats what they call it I've tried a Dubro 2" and 2 1/4" plastic spinner.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Kargo: If the nut doesn`t touch the collar and it is just the plastic, sounds like you have a job for your dremel........

I have had a few like that and i used my dremel and ground the plastic around the nuts away while leaving enough to hold the nuts, I have mounted them in my lath to do it but the dremel was quicker. you might have to go to a larger spinner if you can't grind enough away.

It is my understanding that more blades on an engine/plane were to absorb the higher power that bigger engines provided to get the desired performance. But, I understand that more blades means more drag, and also the blades turn in the wake of the preceeding blade, and all that means lower efficiency. If there are any O.F. out there that remember control line speed and rubber Wakfield freeflight, some of those used a SINGLE blade prop with a counterweight opposite the single blade for balance. With rules limited engine displacement, maximum efficiency of the engine/prop was most important.

Sincerely,

Dick

got the Carl Goldberg kit from years ago ... built it last winter. no longer use that 3 bladed... using a 16x8 now.

Why is there so much opposition to the 3-bladed props?

(Except the heavy ones on the PTS planes. That's obvious.)

I would think they could be used to accommodate ground clearance, and still provide a flyable pitch?

johnS555 and Hobbsy, thanks for the input. I'll try the dremel thing first, and if that fails it looks like I'm off to Hobby Lobby[8D]

Since the blades are constantly moving forward they are moving into new air at all times, hence no ineffeciency.

Sorry guys, but according to the engineers that build the big ones, a single bladed prop is the most efficient due to not effecting the air to the following blade. Just can't put the horsepower into it and get enough ground clearance due to length. Another issue is tip speed, but that is another whole discussion.

last year a valve retainer let go on gallon number 7.
they fixed it. on gallon number three and it seems to to be running stronger and idles down to 1800 and will hold without the glow driver on.
last one took until gallon 5 to 6 before it would idle that low.
I have a 16x13 apc and it pulling close to 9000 static. hope its going to losen up a bit more.
last year the gps was 140mph + with a 16x14

Well I gotta say I am loving my little Saito FA-50.
I got this engine slightly used and fitted it to my .40 size Ultimate.

I was half expecting it to give me trouble as its second hand, but I fueled it, put the glow ignitor on it and cranked it over with the starter. Fired into life almost straight away and idled perfectly. Set the HSN and it ran like a top through the tank of fuel. Only other 4 stroke I have that has run this well as soon as I bolted it to a model is my OS 70 Surpass.

I havent flown the Ultimate yet as I am not sure the 11x6 APC I have on it is enough prop for it.

Anyone flown an FA-50 on an 11x6?
Should I be looking at something closer to an 11x7 or 11x8?

By the way, what is it that gives Saito's their distinctive sound? It cant be the exhaust entirely because even engines with different exhausts still have that same Saito sound.
I have ASP and OS 4 strokes and they dont sound as good.
Am guessing its something to do with the cam timing?

Swixtt,

Your problem struck a note with me. My friend had that same problem. Has the plane been in any, um, incidents lately? My buddy had a ground strike with his prop on landing. The pushrods (or at least one, as I remember) came off one of the lifters. I wonder if that's what's happening with yours? If so, examine the pushrod ends carefully for damage.

Just my $.02.

I run a 12-5 on the 50 and have run a 12.25 X 3.75 depending on the plane

no it hasn't had any damage in that regard. i just adjusted the valves and fueling lines and will need to go back out to re-tune it. thanks for the suggestions though... i'll keep plugging away with it.

Swixtt- Which Sukhoi are you flying???
got the Carl Goldberg kit from years ago ... built it last winter. no longer use that 3 bladed... using a 16x8 now.
Thanks for the info as I have the same kit NIB. Yours looks great. I have a 170R3 just for it.

Some pattern guys are going to 3 bladed props for the above mentioned reasons and for braking action on the downlines. The thing about the next blade hitting disturbed air from the preceding blade is mostly false. That air is already becoming a spiraling slipstream. Planes run smoother with more blades.

The 170R3 should put out the same power as the 1.20.
