When you open the needle on the carb does it run richer?

If the engine has bad bearing is will overheat but also make so weird noises

The Golden Knight engines look great. I have wanted a P-38 with a couple of GK engines in it for ages.
Only been in the hobby for a little over a year so want my flying skills up to scratch before I attempt to fly a twin. (Rudder control etc).

Might even grab an avistar? .40 size and put a couple of Saito 50/56 GK's in it to learn.

I have a 13x4 APC prop here would that work ok for the 50 or too small a pitch? The engine is in a .40 Ultimate.

Looking for more vertical performance. Perhaps I should put a slightly larger engine like my ASP .61FS in it?

Hi w8ye,

The engine does richen up when I open the needle. When it starts to overheat I do hear a strange noise.

I'd be feeling of the prop and wondering about the bearings?

I was going to fit my OS 70 Surpass, but I already have tail weight with the FA-50 and would need a fair bit more with the 70. Battery pack is directly under the canopy. I could move it further aft, but only about 3" or it is too big to fit between the fuse sides.

I will have a look and see how much more weight the 82 would add.
The 46 2 stroke I had in it originally had no problems pulling vertical, but the sound and the mid range burble put me off the 2 strokes for aerobatics.

This plane isnt the Great Planes 40 size ultimate which I am told is fairly heavy. This is made by a chinese company and is light. Originally sold as a Ultimate 30 it didnt sell too well because the .30 size engines arent as popular as the .40's. So they relabeled it a .40 Ultimate. 42" wingspan and roughly 2.5kg. I will weigh it at the club next Sunday.

First want to say thanks for everyones recs on this thread I look good to go now but have one last question (said that before haha). On the saito 82 it says the RPM range is 2-12000K. I remeber reading on this thread that you adjust the HS Needle not near the high end on the ground. What do people recommend or what is the benchmark, seems to be 2200 K on the low and I believe it was 9,000K on the ground (seems a little low). Thanks

The HS needle is to be adjusted 200 - 400 rpm less than the peak rpm obtainable

Keep leaning it out until you hear peak rpms. Then richen back up a couple of clicks until it slows slilghtly. Others like to use a tach but I usually don't take the time. It's good too see a smoke trail in the sky also.

It depends on what fuel/prop you are using and what type of flying you do.

I think the 62 weighs about 460grms and more fourstroke sound to you mate.Everybody here has extras and yaks,i like my deccys and the 115 with smoke is this years goal.Do you know of any sub 2mtr wingspan FULL span aelieron kits that will take a 220?

V8, 500 off the top is going to make it difficult get a 2,000 rpm idle, try setting the HS needle at absolute peak then set the LS needle and lastly only richen down about 250 rpm with tank half empty or half full, I hate trying to figure out which one it is, it gives me a headache.

Sorry Old Fart I don't know of a kit for that size with full ailerons.
I did fly an Edge 540 for a fair while, but I prefer how the Ultimate flies. Having said that I have a couple of fourstrokes that need a new home so am on the hunt for a Yak54 or similar (radial cowl) aerobatic plane. Around the .40 size as I have spare .61 .70 and .91 4 strokes.

Nothing looks as cool as a biplane being thrown around the sky tho to me. I would love an Ultimate that would take the .91 I have. But a .60 size would probably be too big to be hauled around by a .91 the way I want to fly it.

Thanks for the tips on tuning. I was being a bit conservative by running with 500 off the top. Its a fairly new engine (.5 gallon or so on this engine) and just wanted to be on the safe side.
I will lean the top off a bit and see how it affects the idle. The engine has a gurgly sound at around 1/3 throttle. And doesnt transition cleanly. Big puffs of white smoke when I am running at low throttle and give it a short squirt with the throttle. Am guessing a touch too rich down low?

V man, does your .50 have the old style throttle arm or the newer plastic one, I have one of each and could show you a picture of where the LS needle is set. Thanks, Dave

V, I just ran my .50 with a Bolly 12.5x6 and then a Graupner 12x6.

Fuel====WildCat 15% Premium Extra

Stock cast muffler and Bolly 12.5x6 rpm==9,500
TurboHeader & Bolly rpm========9,560

Stock exhaust, stock cast muffler and Graupner 12x6 rpm==9,700
TurboHeader and Graupner 12x6 rpm===============9.950
The sense I get from this is that the Bolly is a slight overload due to the TH not making much difference.
The 250 rpm difference with the Graupner 12x6 is typical of most Saitos. My LS needle is slightly more than 1/16th" below the metal arm.
Idle could be a solid 1,850 but at that setting there was a big hesitation between 4,500 and 5,000, to get a perfect transition I richened the LS 1/4 turn, settled for a 2,100 rpm idle and got a great transition. Picture in a moment.

Odd that the Turboheader and bolly dropped a whopping 4,000rpm!

Might have to look at one of those turboheaders tho if it can pick up 500rpm.

Is the Graupner prop a wood prop? I am not familiar with that brand of prop.

My FA-50 seems to be close to yours. How old is your engine?

For 3d type flying would I be better running something lighter like a 12x6 Topflite power point wood prop? Mainly a bit more vertical is what I would like. I cant locate a 13x5 prop or I would try that. I have a 13x4, but its been reamed to a larger OS size.

Sorry about that whopping mis-print, the TurboHeader on most Saitos gains between 210 and 250 rpm, I think my .82 gained 260. So far the 1.25 is the only Saito that does not respond to the TH. My .50 has an I stamped on the right mounting lug, its one of the last .50s made. Here are some Graupners and a Bolly.

Haha. I thought that rpm reading looked a bit odd

I havent seen those Graupner props. Although that isnt saying much as I have only been flying for about a year or so.

Bolly's are going to be harder and harder to find now. Read that they are in receivership here in Australia (Pretty sure they are made here).

It's a shame because I have always run 13.5x6 props on my OS 70. It liked those props more than any other type I tried.

Thanks for the info Hobbsy. I will see if I can find someone selling some Graupner props here in Aus and give them a shot.

Graupner is very popular in western Europe. Hobby Lobby Int. in the USA also sells them.

Yep, I have a few. Most the gray ones and a couple of black ones are Graupners. There are maybe 10 APCs in the bunch. Thats a real shame about the Bollys, I got them from Dar, the prices were very reasonable as was the shipping and his wife is the neatest and best packager of anything I've received via shipping.
