Switching from the 90º Elbow and Flex pipe to the 90º Elbow and the stock muffler gained about 400 RPM on my Saito 125.

for some reason the flex pipes rob power and they also crack easy if not well supported.

Yep, that is similar to the one Iuse. I used to use a cutoff wheel on my Dremel.

Sounds like this cutter's nylon body makes the difference.   I guess you still twist it around the tubing as it cuts.

Thanks,

Ernie

I still prefer the cutoff wheel.

Regardless of what you use, check for burrs...  Maybe my tubing cutter is old and dull, but it leaves a bit of a burr...    Is this tubing cutter the same size that you can find these in the plumbing section of your local home center?

No, you usually find these where the small hand tools hang, such as small hobby files, etc.

You use this one like the larger models by cranking some pressure on the tubing with a knob. Spin the cutter around the tubing a few times to score it, and then crank down more pressure, etc, etc, etc. You get a nice, smooth cut with a very sight bevel on the edges from the blade. I feel better about sliding fuel tubing on these kinds of cuts over my best efforts with a cutoff wheel and files.

blw,

They do make a nice bevel but they can alsoroll material tothe inside diameter which has to be opened up again.

Hey guys, a Saito gasket set question.   When I purchased a gasket set for my .82, I notice a couple of teeny o-rings come with the set.  Really all I needed (I think) was the big o-ring for the intake manifold.

Do the other o-rings go in the carb?  What symptoms would you be having if those carb o-rings needed to be replaced???

Thanks,

Ernie

And another question concerning the velocity stack on my .82.     I'm mounting the 82 on a profile fuselage and the velocity stack opening will be very close to the fuselage.   How close would it have to be to begin noticing any loss in power?  It looks like unless I remove the stack, there will only be about 1/8" between the fuse and the stack opening.

I guess I could take the time to tach  the engine on the bench and then tach it installed on that fuselage.

Thanks,

Ernie

There's a thin skinny O-ring that goes behind the external ratchet spring and there is a small fat one that goes around the low speed needle valve if you remove the throttle arm you can get to it.

The one on the low speed needle valve will let the LSN move on you in flight if it is worn out.

Thanks Jim.   Does that skinny one prevent air from leaking in along side of the HS needle?

Thanks,

I suppose but the spray bar is such a tight fit in most carb bodies that I doubt any air would leak anyway?

I just had a very close call with my recently inverted mount Saito 82, it backfired on the initial startup and spit the Dave Brown aluminum spinner, nut and wood Zinger off...with the prop pinging off my metal barn and traveling approx. 30 ft.   I'm thankful that I decided to do the pre-flight engine test startup at home and not at the field...I could've easily hit someone with the flying pieces.

Question:  The engine is used, it was bench run in the normal upright position and ran perfectly when I received it.  Also, I have other Saitos mounted upright and side mounted, all with no problems.  Is the backfire on startup somehow connected to the inverted mount position (This motor is on a new Great Planes Reactor which has not had it's maiden flight)??  Is there anything I should be aware of or steps that I can take to help eliminate the tendency for this motor kick back so hard on every start?  The engine will be cowled in while operating on this bird.

Thank you very much in advance.

I have a 82 and it has never backfired but it was mounted on its side.

I have a 72 that was in a "Venus when it was new and it did this very thing ruining a TruTurn spinner and prop. This 72 has never done this again but on subsequent planes it was on its side.

On another note. I am looking for a muffler for my Saito 90 and OS 90 that will fit inside a cowl. There seem to be no shortage for Pitt 2 stroke mufflers  but I cant seem to find similar ones for 4 stroke engines. Any suggestions?

It was reported in this thread about 3 years ago that filling the fuel tank "to the brim" is a possible cause of a Saito engine backfire. I experienced one such incident with an inverted 82. I now back about an ounce of fuel out after fueling and have not had a backfire or prop ejection since on any of the six Saitos I fly regularly.

If "overfilling" the tank is a possible cause, an inverted engine might make it more likely to occur.

Saitos seem prone to this if they are over-primed,

Some time ago, with larger Saito engines, folks got into the habit of fllinging the prop backwards against compression in order to start them. The prop would run up against compression and would then fire in the opposite direction and start running. This technique might prevent the fierce backfire that is knocking everything loose.

I would check the glow plug element with the power on and make sure that you are not applying too much voltage to it if using a power panel or adjustable glow driver. Other conditions, such as over priming, can also lead to engine backfires, as can having the high speed mixture too lean. The latter would usually cause a backfire once the engine was already running.

I have an 82 inverted with the same set up it has backfired twice but it wason start up and i think it was due to over fueling butit didnt throw the prop just loosened the nut.
