RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi I have two inverted saitos and the nipple on the crankshaft is making a hell of a mess. Can you put a 6 inch tube on it to direct the waste out of the cowl or is there a rule of thumb people follow.

Hello,
Iwould be building a 61.2" Cub 20 as my next project, looking ahead the specs says 20-26 4 stroke engine. Just thinking, would a .40 size Saito be way over powering it? I'm sure someone has already built one and this will be my first kit and Ihope not my last. Thanks to a great forum

Well, The Saito 30 would be enough engine for the task on this plane. But if you happen to have a 40 or want a 40 for future flexibility, then go for it.
The 40 weighs little more than the 30 but has more power.
The nice thing about most four strokes is that they run at lower throttle settings for long periods without loading up.
Enjoy

Actually, Iam still shopping for an engine for my future cub, and having no experience at all on a J3 cub makes me wonder if a 30 can fly it with extra power if needed.
Ihave a GP corsair and the recommended 30 engine was I say for normal flying only. Iwould'nt mind having extra power and that made me think about pumping up the power house a litte bit.
Ihave no experience with a cub and looking at 61.2" wingspan make me think can a 30 even lift it off the ground (sorry for my inexperienced)

I have an 82 inverted with the same set up it has backfired twice but it wason start up and i think it was due to over fueling butit didnt throw the prop just loosened the nut.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
The 4-stroke backfire is caused by a lean fuel condition. This could have been a temporary or one time thing due to a bubble in the fuel line or whatever, or it could be that the tank is now in a different position relative to the carb or something related to it's new home.
The safest thing to do might be to slightly richen the needles until it can be fully warmed up and re-tuned.

So...after we "show" what we got, what then? Will we get hero's badges from Horizon Hobby? Fan club centerfolds? I've a 300T, 1- 180, 3-150's 3 120's and a few pounds of parts?

You don't have to actually own a Saito engine. You just have to be a fan of them and seek the company of other members of the Saito brotherhood. Right? 8>)
My first Saito was a GK .50, back in the late nineties. What a great first impression that engine made on me. I've been a fan ever since.

If you want to clean off the stain I heard boiling muff in antifreeze works . I used vinegar but that stunk .

Quote:. I have heard stories that castor causes build up in the bearing of Saitos but that is just hearsay I picked up at my club and don't know if there is any truth to it
This, like 110% of all hearsay is untrue. My Saito1.50 is 18 years old and my Saito .80 and Enya .46MKII are nearly that old. All have run on a syn/castor blend for their entire lives except the 1.50 and Enya which were run on 20% castor for their firsttwo years and first year respectively.

To me, a blackened muffler is the sign of an engine that has provided a lot of service. I kinda like the look when I see it. Nothing is more beautiful than my .56 and the layers of black. I like a clean engine just like anyone else, but castor residue is no problem.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
To all who responded with their experiences and possible solutions to my backfiring and prop pitching Saito...THANK YOU for taking the time and giving input. I'll try these out and hopefully find the solution. I've decided to go with a Great Planes nylon spinner with an aluminum backplate because of the ability to run a double (locking) nut on the crank with this spinnner...I had to order this because the LHS didn't have one in stock. I appreciate the ideas!!

McChiken have you got yourself a tach yet !!!! You should dump that 20/20 and get a 15/18 or a 25/18 with some castor .
Guys, Keep your exhaust tight and sealed and maybe buy a nice looking turbo header !

Castor is not recommended because Saito uses a one piece cylinder and head which makes cleaning carbon deposits very hard without damaging the metal.
Old fashion glycol antifreeze in an old crockpot overnight will make your engine sparkle again.

My older 82 fell out of a plane from a couple hundred feet up so that might contribute to the lower R's. I had a motor mount fail . A friends dog found it a month later . It doesn't idle as low as it should either .
Thanks RC-Bearing , Forgot to mention that part . You must be single if your sticking parts in the crock pot . LOL

Just to be perfectly clear for the newbies,NEVER, EVER ,NEVER use the crockpot for food after using antifreeze in it! Get one from a yard sale or such for cleaning engine parts.

This cylinder is from a 1991 HighCompression 1.50, as you can see the only black is around the exhaust valve. This eniges was run for two seasons on Fox 15%/20% castor. (before I knew better). I replaced the cylinder pictured because I broke it ham fisting the intake nut. I think a testament for WildCat fuel is in order, I re-used the original piston and ring and it still has the original bearings in it. I have an .80 the same age, maybe one year newer still all original. The fuel I use almost exclusively is WildCat 10 or 15% with 18% 80/20 syn/castor blend. Last season I used 6 gallons of PM of the same formula.
