Maybe I'll call after I've fiddle some more with the tank, fuel setup. That is the number one "usual suspect" right now.

Here is a link to a vibration fix for Mojos and other slabs. The new Mojo Moass 60 has the fix (maple engine rails) built in. Seems that if you stiffen up the "nose" vibrations are reduced....
Maybe.

Hey guys,  what better place to ask a question about a saito.  I have a saito 100 on a H9 Corsair with a 16x4W apc.  It idles and transitions awsome! but at fullthrottle it just doesn't get up to speed.  I can bring the throttle back down to 3/4 and won't lose ay RPM.  When it flies by it kind pops and sputters but has never died.  Sometimes it will break out of its shell for a few minutes and run like a bat out of hell.  Then go right back to sputtering along.  I've checked the fueling system and everything looks o.k. Maybe the carb has something in it? I've been trying to figure this out for weeks. PLEASE HELP!

It is typical for a Saito to show little power increase from the 3/4 point on your transmitter to full open.

The Saito sputter huh? It may be a little rich?

Do you have the LSN leaned out to a minimum lean position and still be able to accelerate?

I tuned the LSN pretty lean last night at the field but I probably could go further. It's idling beautifully but at wide open does the sputtering and popping. Kind of a baaaaaaaabaaaabaaaaaaaaaabaaaa sound (yeah I know). Which makes me think that it has something to do with the HSN adjustment. But also last night I tuned it again to the lean peak and it did the same thing. Sometimes while flying it will speed up and sound like a million bucks but then start sputtering again

Why a 16x4 on a warbird ? I would think like a 15x8 or 15x10 would be more of a warbird prop .

I don't ever touch the LSN until I have the topend set . Then if I adjust the lowend I go back and retune the topend . Never start on the LSN . Good start point for LSN is flush to a little recessed from the throttle arm . Always retune top end after adjusting the lowend on a Saito . They kinda work together that way .

You can only go so lean on the low end and then when you hammer the throttle it takes longer to spool up .

canfieldnosedive,

I have the same plane with the same engine and use a APC 14x8. It is fast and performs well. It would be a much better match.

The 16x4 is what i had for the engine. Originally for a funtana. I'm going to get a 14 x 8 soon though. I'm just not sure why it keeps surging at the high end. I don't think the prop would do it.

Hi guys,

I am having some trouble getting the correct timing with my Saito 270T twin.  I have just replaced the bearings and have reassembled the engine, but just can't seem to work out the timing.  I have been searching through many RCU threads, have downloaded the current 300T manual, etc. But I just can't seem to get it right.  Does anyone have any documentation or some images to help me out?

Thanks in advance,

James.

Here are the cams

When standing behind the engine looking forward the left cam is the left picture and the right cam is the right picture

Notice the difference in the way they look and the relationship of the oil hole to the front cam lobe by the gear

Also notice the little dimple in the gear that is your timing mark

when timing the engine you must be standing behind the engine for any references as to position

You install the right cam first with the pistons at top dead center and the right cam reference dimple directly towards the engine.

Then turn the crankshaft one full turn to again place the pistons at top dead center. Now install the left cam with the timing reference mark aimed towards the engine

w8ye,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have worked out this already. I have found a thread where BillRobison says to to set the right side timing you can use a little pin to lock the timing gear using the oil hole in the cam. Is this correct? In the pictures you just posted, both the left and right cams have this oil hole. Can this be used to time the left cam also, or only the right?

Also, the 300T manual says to time the right gear with a straight line mark, and the left gear with the dimple.I do not see any lines on the gear, only a dimple.

Thanks,

James.

no you cannot use a pin to hold the cam in postion on this engine

you must hold the gear in position by inserting a credit card into a gear tooth next to the cam cover

w8ye,

Does that apply for both cams, or just the left one?  I have read that you can use it for the right one but not the left.

I have a bit more info for you.  I have tried several times now to do it as per the manual, lining up the right timing dimple at 9 o'clock and rotating 360deg and lining up the left at 3 o'clock.  The problem I am having is that the left (i think) exhaust valve is opening only just after the piston reaches the TDC on the compression stroke.  Does this mean that I am 90deg out?

On the Saito engines with mushroom lifters like the 120S, 150S, 180, 220, 270, & 300T, you cannot use a pin to located the cam because the lifters have to be installed in the housing before the cam because the lifters have to be installed from underneath due to the mushroom on the end. On these engines you must use a knife blade or card to hold the cam in position as you install the assembly.

The manual is very misleading as they have intermixed the timing of the 100T & 182TDP with the 300 engines.

Other than being made by Saito, the 300 engines have no relationship to the 100T-182T engines. They have different firing relationships. They operate on different principles.

The 100T/182T have a single throw crankshaft and a odd ball uneven firing sequence somewhat like a Harley motorcycle whereas the 300 engine has two crank throws and even firing sequence.

All this 9 O'clock and 3 O'clock stuff must be done from a standing at the rear of the engine relationship.

This was on the 100T engine and it was the left cam had a line and a dimple (you just used the line) and the right cam only has a dimple.

This does not apply to the 300.

Joining the Club with a .56 on an Escapade and a .72GK on a Funtana X 50. Couldn't be happier with both of these engines. Once I learned to tune LSN and HSN these are solid runners if run a little rich.

Do any of you chaps run a Saito 2.20 glow?

If you do, what sort of RPM figures are you achieving?

I've just been running one (a new one), using 5% nitro, 20% oil and a 20 x 8 Zinger. It's peaking at 6,900 rpm. I was wondering how that compares with your figures.
