All:

For general information.

A few years ago Saito stopped using the "C" retainers on the big block engines, This is all with cylinder sizes of 1.20 and larger. The "C" clips have been replaced with proper split cotters, as are commonly found in automotive engines. They are harder to assemble but are stronger. The change was made to eliminate the clip failure that Dunbar had with bis 120. The earlier parts are no longer available, the new spring set comes with the split cotters.

See pictures. Early "C" type on the left, late split cotters on the right.

Except for one thing this is fine - the split cotters wont work with the old valves - the retainer groove is too narrow. So with new springs in an older big block you can attempt to widen the groove, reuse the older caps and clips, or replace the valves at the same time.

I do not know if this change applies to the FA-125, Saito considers a mid block engine.

Maybe Hobbsy will look at his and tell us.

Bill.

You cannot completely trust the photos on Horizon or Tower. They mess up just enough to make you wonder?

Enjoy,

Dennis:

I've seen that Saito site before. There's a lot of good information there, but I disgree with some of it, and other parts, like the section on the genuine Saito "Pumps" is incomplete. Suppose it's really just rivalry. and being jealous of a nice site.

I think W8YE is associated with it, if you notice an error tell him about it.

Fuel? There's nothing wrong with using heli fuel, it's normally nothing but airplane fuel with higher oil percentages. Wont hurt a thing. But do stay with a fuel that has some castor oil in the lube mix.

Back on the valve keepers. Here are two pictures again. The one on the left has the "C" clip, red arrows pointing to the ends of the "C." Right pisture has the split cotters, with the rocker arm installed you see nothbing butthe spring cap.

>>> Can anyone tell me how this engine does with a MA K series 14-6. I picked up this prop to break it in with before I switch to a 13-4 for 3d. Thanks >>>

A 14 or 15x4 Wide APC prop is what most guys are using on the 82 for 3D. A 13 is too small.

All:

Just had a note asking about Saito valve springs. Horizon uses a strange name for the spring set: "Valve Spring/Keeper/Retainer" which can be confusing. But it's the spring set.

Here is a poor quality picture of the C clip spring retainers on the 1.25, also I suspected that the exhaust port on the 1.25 looked larger than the 1.50 exhaust port even though the 1.25 has a slightly smaller pipe. The 1.25 exhaust port is approximately .5 mm larger than the 1.50s. The 1.50s pipe will not begin to screw into the 1.25.

Can someone tell me what part numbers to order for an aluminum spinner and adapter. ( Dave Brown or TruTurn, etc I appreciate recommendations ) This will be used on a Saito 125 from Horizon and would like some recommendations from forum members.

thanks, Bill

Bill:

There is no specific part number for a spinner to fit one particular engine. The only thing specific to the FA-125 is that the adapter nut has to be an 8 x 1.25 mm thread.

The diameter and shape of the spinner cone depend on what airplane you want to match. Nothing to do with the engine.

Bill.

Dave:

So the FA-125 does use the "C" clips on the valve spring caps? Even with the hardest efforts of my best enhancement software I couldn't make them out.

Ports:

As I read your caliper the FA-150 is 9.5 mm, and the FA-125 is 9.75 mm. Not enough to worry about. Thread? Someone from Horizon came in a while back, when we were talking about the 125's exhaust thread, said the test models were 1/2-20 thread, production models are 13 x 1.25 mm thread. The FA-120/150/180 are all 14 x 1.0 mm thread.

Compare the inside diameter of the 125 and the 150 exhaust pipes.

Bill.

Hey All,
I just found the tread. I am a saito fan and owner. .72,.91GK,1.00. I won't buy any other 4stroke. Have had the .72 completely disassembled, and was very
impressed with the overall quality. 72 & 91 are great runners. 100 is new and going in a funtana40 Thanks for starting a club for Saitos.

I don't know how the law reads in your part of the world, but over here we are not allowed to discriminate for any reason, even (SHUDDER) being British.

Besides, we've let some other Limeys in.

Haw.

You're number 194, and as said, welcome.

I wish to make a proposal here.

We all know how much William (Bill) Robison has helped us with his never ending knowledge, and good humor to boot. But, truth be told, his camera sucks big time! His pictures generally are blurry, too small, and look like they were shot with a cardboard box camera. (No offense Bill!!!)

I propose, that those of us who truly appreciate what Bill has done for us and the hobby in general, buy him a new and decent digital camera. Selfish ulterior motive aside (it will make for much clearer images to see) Bill truly deserves something in return.

I ante up the first $25 bucks. We need $200 bucks for a decent quality digital camera. Give what ya can. I will find out if Bill has a Paypal account or some other way to accumulate the funds.

Thanks for participating!
The only thing worse than looking at Bill's pictures are pictures of Bill. HAW!

Dang, Bum!

Just because I invaded your Sepulveda Basin thread, do you really think that gives you the right to come over here and invade this one?

Haw back at you.

Bill.

PS: I notice you've been careful to keep all pictures of YOU off the net. Haw again. wr.
