Hey, I had my saito start to make some weird sounds today at the field, need a hand in figuring whats up.
The engine is a 125a GK running an Apc 16x6, it has had less than a gallon run through it and is mounted inverted (un-cowled at the moment) with a perry VP-30. I have used after run oil after each session of running this engine (around 8 times or so) its running on 12% and up until today has run well. About 4 mins into the first flight of today the engine started making a weird breathing kind of sound with a little bit of a rattle mixed in for good measure. I promptly landed and the engine was not to hot to touch so I don't think its to lean, I restarted the engine but the sound had disappeared. It started making the same sound again about 3-4 mins into the second flight, I landed and kept the engine running so I could inspect it on the ground, the sound persisted and I couldn't pin point its origin. I thought it might be the bearings, but with such a new engine I would hope this was not the case, I then wondered if it could be the tappets/valves as I have not adjusted them yet and I believe they are due for the post break in adjustment. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds as though this may be a fairly new plane. This happened to me once and it was the mounts. Check your mounting bolts at the bulkhead and the engine mounting itself. Eliminate this as the source of the rattle and then look at the engine.

Mike, the VP 30, are you using it to control flooding because of the inverted mounting or to pump fuel fuel because of having the tank mounted on CG or other. Thanks, Dave

PS, is your LS needle in about the same position as this one?

The VP-30 was there due to a tank on the C of G, but I moved it to stop a flooding issue, now the tank is just a bit further forward and much lower the LSN is in about the same position yes.

Good afternoon Guys, good morning to some of you. Well I have just returned home from vacation and found all my parts had arrived for the 180 repair. A new crank shaft , two new bearings, upgrade carburetor kit, new idle needle, gas kits etc. Looking at the crank shaft I see no marks on the teeth of the crank shaft to line up the timing. How will I know when I have to line it up? I will take it apart tonight but need all the advice I can get today,.

Crankpin at top dead center and the mark on the cam gear goes straight down. Keep cam from turing by holding an Exacto blade in the teeth and up against the gasket surface.

Mike, Have you been calling Horizon about it? They should stock a good assortment of Saito parts.

If you're waiting for your hobby store guy, you might want to jump a step in the chain of command there. Sometimes they tell you they've ordered something and they keep "intending" to.....but don't.........

Thats not good news as I may end up needing one. The crank shaft was bent and I am hoping that when I get the shaft out it will not be damaged????. Do you know if you can push the crank shaft out using a press? I tried the method on the video with no result .

If you remove the drive washer with a gear puller the crankshaft should come out the back with little problem

Yeah...nice lookin stuff. It says $38 for "quantity 1". I wonder if that's 1 pair or just 1 rocker cover? Some other good lookin stuff on their web site too.

I can't remember if I'm a Club Saito member or not[sm=72_72.gif]. I have been in RC for 25 years and until 3 years ago I flew nothing but giant scale gas since 1987. 3D profiles got me back into glow and I now have 5 Saitos...an 82, 100, two 150's and 1 brand new 115. I love my Saitos and I'm now learning about bearing replacement[X(]...So how bout it...Can I join?[sm=tongue_smile.gif]

This forum has some great info, but I think it'll take me forever to read all the back pagesbut I'll work on it.

BTW, I recently ran accross this: http://tech.flygsw.org/. He seems to have some good stuff too. One of the things that cought my eye was the positive crankcase ventilation system mod. I know this is probably discussed somewhere on this forum but is it a good thing and worth it?

I went to the tool store and spent some money, got a puller and abutane torch and voila off it came. The cam shaft was bent but the bearing and the collet seems fine. So a few questions.
1. I will change the camshaft but Should I change the bearing as the existing ones seem good? Keep them for a rainy day?.
2. The timing dot on the cam gear. There is one in the front and one at the back. I should line up the one on the front with the piston at Top dead center?
3. What is the back dot for?

My saito 82 has started shaking pretty bad.No crashes or anything. About 3 gallons thru it..Top end is 400 rpm's from peak...low end is 1/32nd rich from where it dies when you go WOT....It shakes so bad at full throttle that it is hard to hold on to the HSN..Any ideas?

Same plane, 3rd prop..all balanced..I guess I did not think the bearings would be bad so soon..I have a few os's with 15 or more gallons on the same bearings..

You can feel bad bearings with your fingers to carefully turn the prop back and forth

They turn real smooth, no grit, no restriction. The cam shaft bent before the collet where the threads for the prop nut are located so my feeling is to use the old ones until I feel there is a problem.

A friend of mine just straightend a crank out of a YS 140 on his lathe with a press and dial caliper..I was shocked..

My bearings feel good..Prop is balanced...Same airframe..Runs like a bat out of hell..

I'm not there, and I don't know your situation and I can't see what the bearings look like. If you can afford it I'd change them anyway. Saitos are worth making sure if you can.
