12 volt motor should not be used with the 24 volts source of power. My experience if you exceed the required voltage is that you just burn it out. Perhaps the biggest problem with high load motors like starters is that the wire connection from the battery source to the motor should be as heavy as possible.

Hello all, I am new to this post.

I have a Saito 180 which has never been ran and has been in storage for approximately 2 years. I pulled it out of storage recently and turned the unit over by hand. It turns over rather roughly almost seems to grind and on the power stroke it seemingly has no compression. I removed the rocker covers and can see the valves open and close which appears to be normal. I pulled the plug and can see the piston moving up and down in the cylinder. Any suggestions guys what I should do next ? []

Bolt it into a test stand and break it in,
10 minutes @ 4,000 rpm 1/4 to 1/3rd throttle
10 minutes @ 5,000
10 minutes @ 6,000,
10 minutes @ 7,000
Peak HS needle, set LS needle, set HS needle 300 rpm rich from peak, mount in plane and go fly

Hi paul and you must be the luckiest saito owner i know!,these engines need constant attention just like the handbrake does so you should'nt have left her in the closet so long you sissy..i like engines more because they loose compression over time with neglect unlike..

Put some oil in it before you run it

I have a 74" KMP Corsair and am trying to figure out which engine I want to fit.

Was wondering which engine you guys would recommend out of the 180, 182TD and the 170R3?
Judging from the KMP Corsair thread here on RCU the plane comes out at around 15-16lbs.

There is one fellow who has run the 170r3 in his and says it flies ok, but could use a little bit more power.

I was wondering if perhaps the 182TD or 180 would give me a bit more power? I would love to run the r3 purely for the sound But dont want to fly a slug either.

The Saito 1.80 single would have more power.

Guys,

I will oil the engine prior to running it, any specific oil? By doing so will I begin to notice increased compression?

Soak it in some fuel. It will soften that hardened castor oil, and provide lubrication. That should get rid of the grinding feel, and help compression.

Since Saito does not pre-run their engines its highly unlikely to have any dried castor in it. A few drops of fuel down the glow plug hole will do wonders for the compression.

The 1.80 single would definitely have the most power. The 1.70 radial would have the least power but would still be plenty for that air frame. Here's my 1/4 scale clipped wing Monocoupe with the 1.70 radial. I've also had this same engine in a 24 pound Beech Staggerwing. The Staggerwing needed more power but still flew well. Unfortunately the vid won't load for me. I am not running Windows as an operating system and havent setup my Linux computer with flash video etc. Will boot to windows tonight and check it out.

Thanks for the advice GaGeeBees. I have wanted a 170r3 for a looong time now and was hoping to get one for the Corsair. One gentleman fitted a 170r3 to his KMP Corsair, but as I recall he flew at 3/4 throttle for most of the time. This makes me think the engine is a bit underpowered for the plane? It did however get the plane home safely with a dropped cylinder.

Am going to have a listen to some vids of the 182T as well to see if I like the sound.

Apparently some of the twins out there vibrate real bad? Anyone know if this applies to the 182T engine?

There is also one more concern with glow engines. The wing has a recess for the fuel tank in it so fitting a larger fuel tank is out of the question (for me at least). The stock tank is 550cc (18.6 fl oz).

Any idea the approximate run time I would get on the above engines?

Using w8ye's 1 ounce per cubic inch per minute at wide open throttle rule of thumb, for your 18.6 ounce tank you should get the following run times:

1.80 = 10.33 minutes
1.82TD = 10.22 minutes

The 170 triple has it for coolness and balance. I think it goes without saying it wins hands-down for highest cost as well.

hello again i picked a saito 125 gk , and now after a few flights it is getting better and better , my question is i need a pump so i picked up a perry vp 20 pump but the problem is that i canot install it on my leo f3a plane . can i use a perry vp30 punp with the vent tube on the saito 125 .

Some people have used the VP-30 on Saitos using the vent.

The pump must be mounted very close to the vent with a "TEE" in the line.
The third line must be open to the atmosphere.
There are situations where the pump will not work unless there is a slight restriction in the vent line to the atmosphere.
But there must still be a opening to the outside.

I was able to use a VP-30 on my 1.25 with good results. It took me a while to "dial it in", but I eventually got it right. Unfortunately, I only had a few weeks to play with it before I dumb-thumbed it into the ground. I have a cartoon of my final configuration somewhere. I'll try and find it and send it to you. In the meantime, here's a picture of the config I started with, except I took out the check valve (#11). Also, here's a couple of threads I used to "learn-up" on the VP-30 setup. Good luck! I was hoping for around 8-10 minutes so 10 minutes at full noise should be fine for any of those engines.

TexasSkyPilot I hear ya. I can get the 1.80 for less than half the price of the 170r3.
The sound of the radial at low rpm gets me every time. [8D]

The sound really is great, but sometimes you have to pick your battles. Those triples are STEEP.....I can afford them and I don't even have one, they're just that prohibitively expensive..... What's the diameter? I have a 1/5th scale Pica Waco now running a Saito 150.....

My 150 came with the plane I bought. I never included any amount for the motor in my bid, and I got it in the deal...so that was quite good too....

8 1/4" at the rear of the cowl and 6 1/2" at the front.

I think I will have to go with one of three engines.
OS 200FS
Saito 1.80 or 2.20?
Aerovate 28cc gas.

I thought long and hard about the 170r3 and 182TD, but I just can't justify the extra for the sound (and complexity to hook up with exhaust, glow drivers etc).
