I've got a 182TD, but it's not in a plane. Can I still be in the club?[]
I would have to vote YES on that

[b]Genesis:

Why not? A Saito is a Saito, even in a boat or (shudder) an R/C car. You're number 50.

Tell us more about it. I can see it's four wheel drive and an "Off road" car, but not much else except that it's one of the larger scales. For one thing, how do you start it? The flywheel's awfully high to use a starter box.

WR, is pic #4 the big bazooka muffler like is on my 1.50?
The lower left is the one that came with the early FA-120S I had, and yes, it's the same one that came with a lot of the 150 and 180 engines in that period. I put the scale in the picture to show its length. The bottom picture in the attachment is the outlet end of it. The top and middle pictures are the baffles in the cast type.

Wondered about cooling your engine. Then a closer look at your pictures showed a fan, maybe from a junk computer power supply, modified and sitting around the nose of the engine. Ingenious sir, that's what is called "An Elegant Solution."

I have seven Saitos at the time, more engines than airplanes. Had a bad summer. A 56 is in a Sig Rascal, two 72's looking for work, an 82 in a Senior ARF, and three 91's, one flying and 2 for planes in the house that I hope to get into the air soon. One of the 72's had bearing failure after one year of service. The bearings in a 91 failed after a couple of years but it is in an airplane that doesn't get flown much. Might be a good arguement for after run oil. The other 72 is three years old and sounds as good as new. The 82 is in the breaking in process. That thing seems to shake a lot more than the 72 that was in the Senior. Overall I have been happy with the performance of the Saito engines and you can't beat the looks.

William Robison--- Why did Saito move the crankcase breather nipple from the backplate of the engine to the area at the front bearing? Seems that if you run the engine inverted, the oil won't scavenge as well, or is there enough crankcase pressure that it pushes it out anyway? It's decidedly less convenient a location than the backplate when attaching a drain line to it on an inverted installation.

[b]Up:

You will find the FA-82, even after being fully run in, will seem to shake more than the others. It's not a mechanical vibration when adjusted properly, but rather a reaction to the high torque peaks.

You are number 51.

Brian:

Two reasons for the move of the breather. First, it does force more lube to the camshaft and tappets, but I think the main reason was going to the plastic back plate. If the breather nipple were in the plastic it would be relatively fragile.

One of my experiments has the breather moved to the top of the cam box, from there to the exhaust rocker box and then across to the intake rocker box. Finally, the actual atmospheric vent is from the intake rocker box. Why? This forces the oil past the cam and tappets for better lubricatjon there, and ensures positive lubrication to the rockers and valve stems. This is mainly for upright engines, when they are inverted the rockers seem to get plenty of oil. Upright they are almost always dry.

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. I don't have a video yet, hope to have one soon. I just installed the 182 and am still breaking it in. I originally had an old OS ft-120 in it but a rod cap screw fell out and trashed the rod and cap. They don't sell parts for the original FT-120 anymore. To tell the truth I was hoping it would go out so I would have an excuse to get the 182.

The truck is the CEN Genesis. Here is a quote from one of my posts in the CEN Racing forum:

"Years ago I mounted an OS FT120 to a RC car I built using a 4WD chain drive kit with a custom rail and plate chassis. The thing went like a bat out of hell but kept braking the chain, diffs and dog-bones. I retired it after my 45 deg drive gears stripped out. At my current job I work next to a guy that is an RC nut and he keeps bringing in his toys. He has got me hooked on RC again. I started looking for a monster truck that would allow me to use my old engine. I wanted one with the transmission placed such that I would not need 45 deg drive gears. The Genesis looked good to me so I got one on e-bay w/o the engine. "

I haven't taken anymore pics with the 182 but here are some more with the FT-120.

Oh ya, I start it using an airplane style starter with a rubber wheel and bump the flywheel from above. I have to run it on 18V to get enough torque.

[b]Gen:

I see you had the fan on the FT also. I like the plumbing to get the carb on top - I wondered if you had mounted it wrong side up.

With both installations I see something that I would worry about with an on-road car, and I wouldn't consider running it off-road in all the dust stirred up until I had a decent air filter on it.

Thanks for the comforting words regarding the 82 Bill. I was a little worried about the shakes.

At the moment, I only have one Saito .82a, still NIB. In the past I have owned:

1 - .50GK
2 - .72
3 - .91
2 - 1.50
3 - 1.80

I like the current Saito engines a great deal. I liked them better before the compression ratio drop that occurred across the line a few years back.

It would be nice if they were like the OS engines as far as break-in is concerned, but Saito's current break-in regime isn't that much of a burden.

I have an .82 in a Goldberg Matrix and absolutely love it. I'll be picking up another .82 shortly. [8D]

Hello,

I live in Belgium and I want to purchase a saito 150. It is my first saito !
Since the nitro is very expensive in Belgium I would like to check the fuel consumption of this engine.
What about the power of this engine ?

Thanks,

I have two 300 twins and one single cyl 91. The 91 is in a 60 size Ugly Stik and one twin in a 30% Lanier Edge 540T. The other twin is looking for an airplane.

This could probably turn out to be a pretty big club but I qualify too. I have a .65 which has been more that patient waiting for me to build something for it to fly yet remains in the box. A .91 in service on a Hangar 9 Corsair and a 1.50 acquired used that's also waiting for me to finish my Balsa USA Sopwith Pup.

Great engines in my experience!

Got a question. Is it worth while to convert a saito multi-cylinder to gas. Is glow fuel usage pretty high?

Go [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3351879/tm.htm]here[/link] for some thoughts on gasoline in a Saito.

Summary: Much less power, possibly very short engine life.

Welcome, Doug. A "Partner in crime" from years past. The Super Duellist was a lot of fun to plan and produce. Have yours flying yet? How about a pair of FA-80s on it?

Heheh...

How You Been...Wild Bill !

Was wondering about yours...mine is kinda in limbo and waiting for me to get those nacelles built...but it maybe divine intervention untill I convert fully from two stroke to the Fource of Four Or is that the Stroke of Four ! In the meantime am fully enthrawed with the Chipmunk and the new Saito 1.80 ! Now I really know what the term " May The Fource Be With You " Heck, I've been spelling it wrong for a long time now.

Now to check the $$$'s on a matched pair of Saito GK .80's Oh Wow! What no .80's now GK .82's Ouch..

That Super Duellist should outa really move out then.

A couple of additional points...

1. To Keep your Saito's lookin new, Spray em down with some good carb cleaner (not on any Plastic) and then a spray job with some silicone oil from your autoparts house.

The silicone will fill the alum pores and will not let the castor burn in. Nice to do it while the engine is still new.

2. Am onto a product that maybe an answer to exhaust extension attachment..it is a metal filled compound that stands temperatures to 2400 degrees f. Super Price at $6.99 per 3.5 oz and needs to be baked before it is permanent... I don't know anymore than that, but have located some and will give it a try. Let you know if it's anygood.
Nope, It's not muffler bandage.

So May the Four'ce Be With You !

An glad to be ole 57 in da club, Thanks Guys!

Doug in Denver
