With  this vibration thing, both Saito and OS make really good engine mounts why would you use anything else.  I am with the previous correspondent that said he had never had any mufflers come loose and didn't use any locking compound.  I put forward the suggestion based on past experience but for me, balanced props good metal mounts (except when I am saving weight and have only short engine runs eg O/T duration events) and I have never repeat never had any problem with any fourstroke to date that I have owned from new.

I've never had any problems with four stroke mufflers and I don't do anything special or use anything on the threads. I even use the plastic motor mounts.

John, if you're curious about the difference in size between the old FA .40 and your new .40a, here's a picture.

Lopflyer- I use only the Great Pains plastic mounts and never had a problem. I use the self tapping 6-32 hex head screws. I've had two nose first crashes with the mounts torn from the firewall, and the screws held firm. They were bent quite a bit in the first crash, but they held.

Mike- Plumbers tape is sometimes labeled as virgin teflon. Maybe marketing knows that guys will jump on the virgin kind first when they have the the chance???

I've never had a muffler loosen or give any problems.

Hi All,

I would like to join the club. I have a 220 S I that I purchased used. It was mounted in a 150 Twist. Flew the plane maybe 5 times when it went dead stick on the last flight. I was just cruising about half throttle when it quit. Got the plane down safe. After some investigation I found that the cam gear had lost four teeth. I ordered a new cam gear and it finally came in after waiting 2 months for it. Anyway, My question is....Before I put the engine back together what other things should I check? I don't know why the cam gear lost the teeth in the first place. So, what should I look for to see what might have been the cause. What kinds of things would cause the lose of teeth. I'm fairly new to 4 strokes. I have rebuilt 2 strokes, but never a 4 stroke. Any help and suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Also, how do I check to tell if the bearings are OK?

Thanks in advance

Tom

As long as the bearings are smooth, they should be OK.

You might instect the crankshaft carefully in case there are teeth missing on the gear.

Where did those gear teeth go? Sometimes they get into the bearings

Look at your cam followers also, they may have wear on the mating surface?

w8ye,

I flushed the engine out pretty good. Lost 4 teeth, but only found 3 when flushing. Do I have to remove the bearings to make sure the other tooth isen't in there? Didn't really want to do that, but if I must then I must.

Will any wear on the cam followers be easy to spot? Should I put new ones in anyway?

Thanks

Tom

Wear on the cam followers is easy to see

That missing tooth may have been the original that gout ground up when it took out the others?

Those little metal particles may be in the bearings? If they are, you can feel it.

The little metal pieces will go past the shields on the bearings.

When the 40a first came out Horizon sort of claimed it was the same size as the little .30 but its slighlty larger and mounts in a larger foot print.

G'day And the FA-40a engines run really well too. I have two. One is in an 80% AstroHog mounted upright and the other is in a Phoenix Tiger Moth mounted inverted.

I have seen that the airbleed carbys don't run well inverted. Well the one in my Tiger Moth does. I originally flew the Tiger with an FA-30 but it was just a little underpowered and the 40 was the perfect fit and power match for the plane.

The little AstroHog is a really sweet flying plane and the little Saito suits it perfectly. I am no aerobatics pilot but a friend put it through its paces and declared it was "the best plane I have flow this year" and he loved the way the engine worked with it. (He is a real OS engine man too so this is real praise coming from him.)

That's a wide prop. Those numbers seem fine.

Jaybird,

I think that blw hands those out... My guess is that you certainly qualify. Blw checks in pretty often so he should see you....

BLW will be along within a few days. He may be involved with a big project right now? I know he had a big event (for him) coming up.

ORIGINAL: rocketman-RCU

Everything is new. New carb, all new gaskets, all new o-Rings on the intakes and on the carb insert. New crank, new cams. Still has original valves and springs, but they looked ok. Even tried aux. fuel tank.
New does not mean it is perfectly serviceable unfortunately, recheck for blockages and vacuum/air leaks and the seal between end float button and rear case/plenum.Check valve seal and spring tension. If plugs, fuel and tank including lines are all checked good it has to be an overlooked problem with the carb including spray bar location and mixtures and or the engine itself.Work through a process of elimination as if you have just aquired the engine starting fresh.

Also on the three cylinder radials the placement of the distribution plate behind the carb is critical. Refer to the instruction manual.

Hi guys, I can, now, officially be part of the SAITO club!
Got my 150 GK and ran a tank through it to start the break-in process on a test stand.

But I have a couple of Qs.
I bought a RC specialities muffler with a 90° coupler to fit inside the cowl, and in fact I had to move the carb manifold on the side to accommodate the muffler.
Basically, the muffler exit is straight inline with the engine, and the carb is moved to the side by 30°.
It's mounted inverted and the carb was already very low compared to the fuel tank, and now it's slightly lower than before.

Any problems with that ?
And I am planning to use an onboard glow system for start up and also for idle.

You might experience fuel siphoning out through the carb?

Jim- packing to move has begun almost full time. I'll be glad when this all over and done with, but it's worth it in the end.

I have an older Saito 72 that runs great, but, while tuning it on the ground, the needle value seems to have little to no effect. I've set the valves many times, but still no changes.
Any ideas?
