I enjoy buying used engines as I can fix them and enjoy doing so. But, I bought a 91 that had the chrome plating on the cylinder damaged. It would stop (seize) running sometimes and it cost me a plane before I could diagnose it. It has supplied a lot of spare parts for other engines, though....

Thanks for the tip. I found a Sig Somethin Extra and might be able to finalize the deal tomorrow.

The FA80 GK I purchased is the ABC Hemi, High Powered High Cam Series. Anyone know how old this engine might be and if this is one of the high compression models? Thaks in advance.

Get the Sig Somethin Extra. I am running a Saito 82a on mine and it is great. The Saito FA 80 would be great also. Give it a try.

Horizon stopped selling the 80 about 6 yrs ago.

It being a golden knight might make it less than 25 yrs old?

I've seen a SSE with a 72 on it. Impressive. I have a 72 sitting around and have a long range project going off and on. I have 2 of the planes at home and access to 2 more at work. I'm halfway wanting to extend the fuselage several inches. Anyway, the SSE is a good plane for a 82.

Is the sse a tail dragger? if so it should be fun on the ground and in the air,if not wack an 82 into the seagull 65" decathlon and after a few flights get the cg well back it's a good ride wide open

Yes, it's a taildragger. I've run a 12.25" APC on mine and I used a 1/4" block under the main gear for more clearance. Still needed to keep the nose high on grass at all times. It could use another, higher landing gear.

Performance wise=no difference, the AAC is lighter.

Andy, does your .80 GK have a letter designation stamped on the right mounting lug. I have a high compression version that has not letter on the right lug. It has wicked compression and will fire up on Davis Diesel fuel with no glow power.

Here is the 1987 Clarence Lee test of the early high compression .80, if the link works we'll keep it around.

I just broke in a new FG57T...What a fantastic engine!!! I fly a 180 on a Great Planes Super Stearman and love it...I bounce start the 180 but had no trouble starting the 57T the standard flip method. Is there anything I should be aware of to take care of the 57T...What is the extension on the Ignition labeled Tack? And, do they make an airfilter for the 57T?

Yes, that's the engine...what a sweetheart to start and breakin...used Red Line Oil...20/1 ... fresh gas... broke it in on a Falcon 24/8. I would recommend this engine to anyone wanting a solid ... beautifully machined work of art....and what a sound!!! so wanting to take care of her and the Carb points down...and the first plane will be an open cowl...I wanted to protect anything from entering the Carb...any idea on an airfilter? Oh...used my own Fromeco Tack to set her...but was interested in the output connection on the ignition...

No letter just a round mark so I guess it's a high compression version. SSE lookout!!!

Is your SSE going to be a kit or arf? I think you'll need to make plans for the battery pack to be in the rear of the plane if it's a kit. I don't know much about the arfs except that some things are different. Wing tubes aren't interchangeable.

I have a kit coming. Already thinking about mounting the elevator and rudder servos at the rear rather than using long pushrods.

since I am on this forum...please tell me the correct way to set the Tappet's ... I have read several thoughts...but is there a definate way to adjust them....? For instance the instructions for the 180 and the 57T are different....

Hi,

Just recently bought a FG-57 Twin Gas and so far Im loving it! I have it in a 2.1M CARF Yak 55sp and its been great for the few flights ive put on it. I do however have an issue with it that is kind of bugging me. When I turn it over by hand I get a squeaking sound from the motor. I think its coming from the valve train somewhere? It has not been run lean in any way and if anything its probably on the rich side. Im running VP 94 octane/Amsoil @ 20:1 with a 23x8 Mejzlik prop. Has anyone had this issue before with Saitos? Turns over nice and smooth and runs great but if something squeaks it means its dry right?

I have that engine...and no squeak ... I do get a squish...squish when it is primed and there is fuel in the cylinders. Here is a thought...back that Octane down to 89...just regular gas it doesn't need the higher octane...and I use Red Line Racing oil and a 24/8 Falcon. My engine runs strong....

Hi carl could be the cam . A guy at our club had 125a that made a funny noise . It was sent back under warrenty and was told that the repair involved relieving the cam . What ever that means , maybe its to tight on the shaft , also check the breather nipple to see if its blocked . One of my 82s had one that wasnt drilled to the correct size . W8ty set me straight with that one , it looked small compared to my other one. Other than that dont know but good luck anyway . Old Fart has one so see if he can shed some light if his is the same it may come good after a bit more run time . As for the other post tach on the ignition lead would prob . be for a tacho like the rxcel one to be fitted if you wish . Cheers the pope

I dont think the fuel has anything to do with it though, Its just small engine fuel with no ethanol or other junk that you get at the pump here in Maine. It squeaked a little after I broke the engine in then went away (running 91 pump gas at the time). Now after about an hour of run time it seems the sound is back. I have the valves adjusted pretty close to zero lash with just a tiny bit of clearance...maybe .002-.004. If I pull the pushrods out of the right cylinder the sound goes away. Mine did the same when I was breaking it in so I swithced to red line racing oil like the other guy did no more squeaking , hard to believe just an oil change would do that but it did have been flying mine for over a year now no problems.
